I can sleep during the day but find it very difficult to sleep at night. Just wondering whether there are any medical reasons why this is happening?

I suffer with terrible insomnia which has resulted in me becoming ill in the past due to sleep deprivation and I make sure I never sleep during the day however tired I feel as I know that if I do there will be even less chance of sleeping during the night so you should really try hard to not sleep during the day to give your body chance to feel tired during the night. Try not to eat late in the evening, no alcohol, caffeine drinks like coffee/coke etc no chocolate. Keep the bedroom really dark and not too hot. Exercise helps promote healthy sleep so maybe wearing yourself out physically later on in the day/early evening might help tire you out. Are you worried or stressed out over something as this is the worse thing for preventing sleep as you just can't switch off then? You can get natural remedies to take to help you sleep but if you are having too much sleep during the day they won't work. If you've tried all the suggestions people make and they don't work try talking to your Doctor as there might be some medical reason for your sleeplessness but try getting into a sleep routine first to see if it helps. I hope you manage to sort it out and are able to get a good nights sleep regularly!

Are you a vampire?? LOL...that was funny!

Well...just woke up from an 11.5 hours' night sleep....*stretch*! There could be lots of reasons you can't sleep at night. I had that problem too. Are you stressed or worrying? Are you going thru menopause? Those were my issues. The other person had some good tips about the diet and exercise. I just moved from the country where it was pitch black at night to an apartment with a bright light outside my window so I bought a 40-blinks sleep mask which keeps it nice and dark for me (cheaper than drapes)....that helped too. Try to get on a regular sleep schedule every night and cut down the naps during the day....although, I love my naps too and I've read 30 minute power naps during the day work wonders (no longer than 30-40 minutes though) and I'll testify to that....

One other thing to try....pick up a copy of Steven King's "Insomnia"....lol put me to sleep instantly every time I read a paragraph or two. I think I made it through Chapter 2...maybe it got better, but wouldn't know? Good luck....happy zzzzzzz's to you!

Although you will feel that you are exhausted in the daytime and want to sleep, try to stay awake, and only try to sleep at night - best to get into a routine. Having said that, caffeine will keep you awake so try to drink caffeine free drinks (tea, coffee coke etc)
Exercising can help, as can eating earlier in the evening.
Make sure you bed is comfortable and that you are warm enough and try not to worry about anything. It's good to relax and get in the mood for sleep. (Some say that having sex helps too!)
You have to associate your bedroom with sleep so if you can't sleep it's a good idea to get up for a bit, and try again later when you feel more sleepy.
There are also some herbal remedies available at the chemists eg. Kalms. My friend said these were very good but the chemist will be advise to you on what is best.

If all else fails, you could move to Australia then you would be back in sinc with the sleeping habits. lol

I hope this helps.

Do you actually go to sleep during the day? If so DONT! This will totally mess up your body clock. Try and stay awake for the entire day. If you are really tired in the day then have a power nap for 20 minutes no more. If you arnt always sleeping in the daytime and you still have trouble sleeping a mug of hot milk helps me drift off and when i do this i normally sleep right through until my alarm goes off.

Many things could be causing your lack of sleep, i.e. psychological, emotional and physical. Before you go to prescription sleep aids try conservative methods: Get plenty of exercise outdoors every day in the sun, walking, riding a bike or jogging. Eat a good diet and if you are overweight, try to lose some weight. With enough exercise, it would come off. You may be having some psychological problems also that keep you from sleeping. Try to figure out what they are and try to work them out with a plan. Instead of sleeping during the day, get out of the house so your circadian rhythm can become rebalanced.

You may need to take a sleep aid for a few nights, and FIGHT that urge to sleep in the daytime so your body clock can get back on track. If you stay awake all day and still have trouble at night, try taking 3mg of Melatonin before bedtime. It is available over the counter and helps promote natural sleep. (It is not a drug). If the situation persists to a point where it disrupts normal activity, talk to your doctor about trying Ambien. (NOT Ambien CR--the control release is too slow)

Have you ever worked nights? If yes, then maybe your internal instinct is still on that clock. If not, try this....Get up early in the morning, try to exercise sometime through out the day ...do not exercise before bedtime and do not eat 2 hours before bedtime. Take a warm bath before going to sleep and lay of the caffeine. Try not to take naps during the day. Good luck

you are used to sleeping during the day, you need to force yourself to stay awake during the day, even if you didn't sleep the night before, drink some coffee it helps, and then that night you should be able to sleep, if this doesn't help you need to have a sleep study run, it could be something medical. ~ Good Luck and God Bless

Do not sleep during the day cut down on the caffine and don't drink it right before you go to bed...you could have your days and nights mixed up if you have ever worked at night and had to sleep during the day,but if you are worried go to the doctor..

You have slowly turned your body clock around by sleeping in the day. Try not to sleep in the day no matter how hard it is, you should eventually return to normal. If you don't then see your doctor and explain, he will give you tablets to sort it out. I had this trouble about 40 years ago and the doctor gave me a course of tablets to keep me awake in the day and tablets to make me sleep at night.
