I value the intelligence of my fellow P&S people so I'm asking this question in here, too!

My mother is very ill and in the hospital a few hours away. My dad drives down there and spends a few nights with her then drives home. They're both retired and on a fixed income. I have two older sisters and one of them is beginning to really bother me with some of the stuff she's saying. Myself and the other sister have been giving our Dad money here and there so he can afford gas and food while he's staying at the hospital with Mom. It doesn't bother us, because our mother is very confused and only recognizes Dad and we feel he needs to be there. We also take care of his laundry and stuff while he's gone. The third sister that has not been helping is telling us Dad is gambling all his money away. We both know that's not the case. She wants to get a lawyer and have dad labeled incompentent and handle his money. I don't want a fight with my siblings, but I don't want this to happen to our Dad

I am fighting a war with my wife and her mother on how to dress our baby going from the house to the car. (outdoor exposure 45 seconds). I am convinced tha tthe baby does not need to be over dressed, Just a hat and a blanket should be enough, but they insist a sweater is needed, etc.
I need advice. Our pediatrician, insists that cold exposure has nothing to do with getting sick.
I am conviced that the more clothes the baby wears, the more sensitive to cold weather he will be in the future. Is tolerance to temperature genetic? or the body/mind learn with exposure? HELP!!

KE=1/2mv^2 is the equation for kinetic energy. The author of an online physics textbook for scientists/engineers states that the 1/2 constant in the equation is entirely a result of the metric system. That is to say that it is arbitrary. If you were to use another system, say the old English system, the constant would be different.

I believe that the 1/2 is a necessry consequence of the double integration of F=ma from classical mechanics. If by definition f=ma is true, then the 1/2 value for the kinetic must follow regardless of any unit system and is thus not arbitrary.

From my understanding 1/2 in the kinetic energy theorom is dissimilar from say the gravitational constant found in the equation for the universal law of gravitation. The gravitational constant is one of proportionality whose value would change depending on the units used.

Can a chemist or physicist clarify? or anyone else?

Why are teachers unions always blamed for problems with the school system? The unions don't run the school districts - the politicians do!

The union's job is to protect teachers from arbitrary abuse by management. This is very important - as anybody who's ever worked in a non union job can tell you, in the absence of union protection, your boss can do whatever he/she wants, and you have minimal legal recourse.

In any case, why do teachers unions get blamed for decisions made by the politicians who run the Board of Ed, the City, the State and the Federal government?

They're the people who are responsible for the problems in the school system - because they are the ones who make the decisions about how the schools are run, not the teachers union!

I have a 10 month old lab/pitbull mix, the problem is when we leave to go to work, she destroys our wood furniture and our couch. She knows she shouldn't do that because she always gets in trouble for it, but she just won't stop. We had to get rid of our couch and coffee table because they were ruined. We got a new couch yesterday (no wood this time) and in not even 24 hours she tore a hole in the arm of it. She is only alone when we are at work, the rest of the time she goes with us in the car to places. When we do go out to eat or something, she gets mad if she doesn't come and knocks over the garbage cans and tears the carpet. Im getting a crate for her because she just can't be trusted anymore. It's not like she doesn't get punished for all of it or that she doesn't have a ton of toys to play with. I thought she would have grown out of this by now. She isn't a bad dog and I don't want to get rid of her, that is my very last choice...can someone (sincere) help me? Thanks!

I'm the lead guitarist, I started the band, but the lead singer sings shock rock in kind of a rap tone. The drummer plays old 70s country. Then the bass is like obsessed with Paul Mccartney, so we are all mixed. I play kind of a "dude rock" type of music. What should I do? The sound of the band is retarded.

Okay so I got my new Canon A530 Digital Camera for Christmas. I need to lower the resolution but I dont know how to. The resolution is too high for me to take a good amount of pictures currently only allowing me to take 5 on a 16mb card, and 30 seconds of video capture before the card is full. Anybody know what buttons to press to get me to the resolution part.
