Where in CA is the best place to live if you are a surfer looking for the true California lifestyle, or as close to 1970s-1980s California as possible.

Those of you who live in Southern California, where do you live, do you love it or hate it, and why?

Getting married in Burbank - looking for somewhere to stay the wedding night! (could be in SFV, Hollywood, or towards LAX) Looking to keep it under $200, and we'll be leaving for our honeymoon the next day. Any ideas?

I'm going to work in Westwood area near UCLA. I prefer to live in a safe neighbourhood. Hopefully the rent is not too $$$. I don't mind driving to work or taking public transportation.

For someone riding a bicycle down the California coast (from the north), what is the best way (easiest, safest, shortest) to get through the L.A. urban area to Studio City (the Ventura, Coldwater Canyon intersection)?

We will be working in Glendale: Two guys from Baton Rouge, La.--been together for five yrs; two pets (4 and 8 lbs); must live in gay-friendly area (pref. not West Hollywood) and be close to a park or some such for the mutts. Los Feliz, Echo Park, and Silverlake seem great just from searching online.

One of us has a great job waiting (making ~85k per year), the other can hope to make ~17-20k per year, at first. We know what kind of rent we're looking at, so we're prepared for that. But our credit really stinks.

We're going there December 11 and we're not coming back until we have a place.

***Any and all suggestions, warnings, miscellany will be greatly appreciated, as we're trying to build a strategy now. I hear it can be a nightmare finding a place in L.A.***

Staying in a hotel on South Grand Avenue (downtown), what kind of attractions can I see here, and how far away are they? Can i travel by the Metro system or should I just walk to each attraction?

For those that have long lived in LA and know all of the city and surrounding suburbs and environs well, what would be your opinion, from ongoing info you've seen/heard, on the safest neighborhood or suburb to live in in greater Los Angeles? Safest as in lowest crime overall, and low or no gang activity. :-)

Now here's another qualifier I forgot to mention up there: inexpensiveness. LOL! In other words, the safest CHEAP place to live in LA (i.e. apts at $800 or less). I know that there's probably a huge discretion between safe and cheap; probably have to have less of one to have more of the other! But, I'm still checking anyway. :-)

Hope to hear fromyou soon. Thanks, Los-Angelians. :-) LOL

Ok, so I am planning on moving to Los Angeles sometime soon and am looking for a nice area to live that is not way too expensive. I don't mind paying $1200 for a one bedroom apartment as long as it's in a relatively safe neighborhood. I have heard that the southern suburbs are nice and that the western neighborhoods are okay. Which ones are the safest but also relatively close to cultural venues and other cool places LA is renowned for? Also, I've heard the San Fernando Valley is nice, but I've also read it's the heart of the porn industry...is it odd living next door to people shooting porn films...seems to me like it would be a bit uncomfortable. Any thoughts?
