We will be working in Glendale: Two guys from Baton Rouge, La.--been together for five yrs; two pets (4 and 8 lbs); must live in gay-friendly area (pref. not West Hollywood) and be close to a park or some such for the mutts. Los Feliz, Echo Park, and Silverlake seem great just from searching online.

One of us has a great job waiting (making ~85k per year), the other can hope to make ~17-20k per year, at first. We know what kind of rent we're looking at, so we're prepared for that. But our credit really stinks.

We're going there December 11 and we're not coming back until we have a place.

***Any and all suggestions, warnings, miscellany will be greatly appreciated, as we're trying to build a strategy now. I hear it can be a nightmare finding a place in L.A.***

Hi,

I have an apartment through a company called Healstone. They have an office in Long Beach but have properties all over. You can look them up on line and give them a call. Call the Long Beach office and ask to speak to 'Heather' (562) 285 0107. Tell her your situation and set up an appointment for when you will be in town.
You can say that your friend who lives in Hollywood recommended you, if you want more information and help with this, feel free to e-mail me.

I had a bad time looking for apartments until I went to Healstone because a lot of apt. managers will ask you for an application fee and then tell you no. They are just keeping the fee. Its best to find a more reputable company.

Glendale is a nice area, I would suggest looking for an apartment in that area. It sounds like your earnings are decent so you shouldn't have too much trouble. Also Burbank is a nice area, next to Glendale.
I think that LA is gay friendly........its a huge melting pot here, a lot of diversity. I know there is a large gay population if you drive down Santa Monica Blvd, there are many clubs and restuarants and it looks like a fun place to hang out and feel like you fit in.

I'm sure you will find somewhere you like and will enjoy the area.

Feel free to e-mail me for more help.

;-)

I have two solutions for you.

1) The best site I have found to locate rentals in the Los Angeles area is www.craigslist.org - click on California and then Los Angeles and start your search. Saves lots of time and gasoline.

2) I am vacating my own apartment in Glendale at the beginning of the year, so it will be available. It is a large single in an older building right off Glendale Avenue and Colorado Street, close to everything, including freeways. My rent now is $800/month, a real bargain in these parts! I don't know if they will raise it once I move out, but that should give you an idea.

I agree with a previous posting. Glendale is nice, so is Burbank. Echo Park and Silverlake are getting a bit pricey, but if you live in Glendale, Burbank or Eagle Rock/Glassell Park corridor area, you won't be far from those sections of town, whenever you want to visit.
Have a safe trip out here and hopefully the weather will warm up as it is a bit chilly right now!

Well you could live in Glendale, sounds like you can afford the rents there for a nice apt. Yes, Los Feliz and Silverlake are good choices for you, gay friendly, and kind of trendy areas.Parts of Echo Park are nice, others are NOT! There is a dog park in Silverlake I used to go to all the time, so that would be a plus for your pooches. You might also consider Montrose or Pasadena, both still close to Glendale. Both nice, safe areas and affordable.

I think the place I live in now is a gem, after spending all day long walking around North Hollywood. 11 minutes from Glendale according to google maps. Burbank is supposed to be really cool but very expensive.

The site below is the company I rent through. They're pretty good to work with, generally stay out of our way. I know they charge more for pets, but I'm not sure how much. They didn't charge us extra for our lizards.

Isn't this the UK site your asking this question on.

Are you trying to depress us, talking about sunny LA and great lifestyles, while the rest of us and plugging away in cloudy manchester and drizzly birmingham in blustery England. :p

GL and HF anyway - hope you find a dream pad.
