Depends on what part of the City you want to experience. If you want to stay out in Santa Monica, go to the Viceroy or Shutters. All of the Kor hotels are cool, see the link below. For the Sunset Strip: The Argyle, Chateau Marmont or The Mondrian. Downtown - The Standard. There are so many and it depends on your price range and what you define as "cool and chic".

Currently The Standard - Downtown is the hottest hotel in L.A, but during awards show season, nothing beats the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel.

Manness Hotel on La Cienega, a few blocks from Beverly Hills. All of the upgrades with out the price. They have free parking.l

The Beverly Hills Hotel (as stated above) is one of the fanciest. It's also popular with celebrities. The Hotel Bel-Air is also pretty luxurious.

The Standard. It was featured in Sex and the City. It's right in the middle of Sunset Blvd.
