What are the differences between Palm Springs proper, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and La Quinta? Which area is the best (I know different areas are best for different people--any insight is welcome).

My mother in-law lives in Rancho Mirage It's awsome there. She's also lived in Palm Desert, And La Quinta is very nice Too. Down town Palm Springs, Lot's of tourist when it's the season,( Nov-May ) Just stay out of Cathedral City, Lot's of gangs there. Other than that I wish I was there right now

Hi , although I visited PS years ago, I know that it has changed alot. But it is a great winter place to go to. Very hot in the summer.I just recall that the other cities are like suburbs, again a long time ago. the 70's actually. I understand that PS is a gay enclave, so if you are anti gay maybe not the place for you. I still would like to go back for the better part of our Wisconsin winters, I always had a nice time in Palm Springs. Good luck to you, maybe check a travel guide too.

Doesn't matter which you stay in since they all border one another. Just find a resort/hotel that suits your needs.
