most wealthy people in cities go to live in suburbs. what is left behind is the poor and high crime areas of an inner city. most commerce takes place in the outskirts, near strip malls and shopping malls which are miles away from the actual city. How can we bring people back to the city and revitalize what was once the heart of a bustling commerce center?

Hi There! My hubby and I will be in Seattle in mid September right after our Alaskan cruise. We've visited Seattle on many occasions in recent years. So, Pikes Marketplace, Space Needle...etc. have been done and re-done.

I'm thinking that maybe there are some "vacation spots" in the area. Maybe an hour or so away from Seattle that we could head for. For example: I live near SF...and there are lots of things to do in SF...but a couple hours South and your in Carmel...or an hour North and your in Napa Valley.

So...you Seattle-ites. Any ideas?

I get several magazines each month, and a few months ago one of them ran an article about cooking vacations where you could learn to make jam, bake bread, make your own butter, etc. I can't seem to find anything about this on the web. Does anyone else remember reading this? Can you help me find places that offer this? I'm going crazy looking on the Internet! Thanks! (Here's a list of the magazines to help jog memories: Reader's Digest, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle, Parenting, Martha Stewart Living. I know, I know, I read a lot. Probably why I can't remember anything!)

I just read this article in the SF Chronicle about a town in Marin County that is vehemtly opposing 4 Habitat for Humanity homes from being built and it really shocked and surprised me. Now Marin County is a very liberal county and the people there support such things as affordable housing and helping out the less fortunate. They claim these 4 units will incease traffic and parking congestion!! It's 4 units so how is that going to make a difference with 12-16 at most living there? The people that live there even say they support H4H and have even participated, but now they don't want it anywhere near them. How can you claim to believe in all these progressive values yet your actions totally contradict it?? I would totally expect something like this in Orange County but not Marin. Read the article and tell me your thoughts on these people.

What are some great, yet inexpensive hotels in the Seattle, Washington area? I am not looking to stay at the Hilton or Westin. I like a hotel that is reasonable, but nice, clean and convenient to shops and restaurants.

My husband is in the Marine Corps and is up for Recruiting. He can put in a request of where to go, but we can't figure it out. We are both from CA and this is where he's been stationed for the last 5 years. I must say what are important factors to me, my husband is black, and I am white. I do not want to move to a state that we would get a lot of problems from this. We have a 6 & 3 year old, so I want to go somewhere with good educational systems. I hate bad weather i.e; hurricanes, tornados, snow, etc. I may be able to deal with some snow and what not, but not huge snow storms where we can't leave our home. I just basically want peoples honest opinions of the states they do or have lived in. I want to know how diverse they are, crime rates, all that! Thank you so much for your opinions.
