I am open to opinions because I am from the east coast and I feel like the west coast doesn't understand us.

Definitely New York. Everyone is rude and crass and couldn't care less about the people around them.

I live in San Diego and there are ton's of people from the East Coast here and they all seem pretty friendly and they all seem to get along with everyone else here. Maybe that's just SD and people just like it here, but I don't think people in CA are snobby and stuck up like the first poster said. People in CA are more laid back than the East Coast so if you try to get in their face with that NY in your face attitude then you might see some rudeness b/c people here are not like that, but that doesn't mean we are mean.

Also for anyone that has never been to CA, don't get all your stereotypes from dumbas* shows like Laguna Beach, The Hills, or The OC. That stuff is totally fake and crap, you can find those type of people in any wealthy community in America. People can be just as snobby and stuck up on Park Ave or the Hamptons, try to tell me they aren't too.

Also it's New York that has a reputation for having rude people there and not CA, so please New Yorker's explain why they have that reputation if it's Californian's that are rude.

What is it that they don't understand about people from the East Coast exactly?? You seem to already know what answer you are looking for considering you asked it in the New York City category, why don't you ask this question in the General -US category and see what people that don't live in either place think?

In both places from experience it really depends on where you go. Some parts of San Francisco and Oakland I would not walk in day or night. They same with New York. However, people tend to think us east coast New York and Jersey especially have attitudes. Just because some of us have that distinct accent,up to date fashion, and have access to a place that everyone wishes to go. Not being funny, but this is the conclusion I get from asking those judgmental people questions.

It really depends where you are. I live in California and I'm not going to say Everyones Happy here!!! Because that isn't true. There are definitely lower-class parts of California and higher-class parts of it. But you can't judge people on their class either. I use to live in the Ghetto where there were a few druggies on the street but other than that, everyone looked out for each other there!!! Our neighbors were really nice and I played with the kids on the street without any worries!. And of coarse we have the upper-class. Here people mainly keep to themselves but there are still rude, ignorant people here.

So to answer your question, I really don't think one place is meaner than the other. It just depends on how you present yourself and how much you ignore the ignorant people!

Well I agree with your statement- each coast doesn't understand each other- all three of them to be exact.
We need to work harder to understand our own world within our own borders before we asssume to understand others.

I live on the Gulfcoast-Houston.
A port city and most folks assume a "cowtown". Not even close, we are so diverse in culture and people drive 10 miles in any direction and you are somewhere else.

The prices of basic living expenses are so inflated up north, south in Florida and out in Callie. Because those are places people want to be!

Maybe we can help each other. Just today I am having a "discussion" with my friend from Long Island, I am from Oregon. I told him, again, today that he is mean and I am tired of him slamming Oregon...he says stuff ALL the time about Oregon and makes me feel bad. Is this what guys from Long Island do to get the girl's attention? Put down their home state? We are friends and I think perhaps this is his attention seeking ploy. He can be nice when he wants to me but I am feeling like he has this animosity against Oregonians. I told him he is just jealous beause this is such a beautiful state. =o)

In New York they'll say "F*** You!" to mean "Have a nice day". In California they'll say "Have a nice day" to mean "F*** you!" I've found that in most cities in Southern California there is a very passive agressive meanness, while in New York it's very active. Which is better? I think from strangers I'd rather have them hate me and keep silent then hate me and tell me so.

Neither. Californians may be more reserved especially in Los Angeles and New Yorkers tell it like it is. But I don't think we're meaner than people in New York.

New York was voted the politest big city IN THE WORLD...and I agree with most of the negative comments about LA,but I like San Francisco, although San Francisco has the nastiest most aggressive homeless beggars I hae ever encountered. I got muged once in San Francisco, but the guy was pretty nice about it, he said this is a bad area you should pay me for an escort, I gave him five bucks, and he said I think you better give me a little more than that so I gaave him a 20 ... and he was oK with that and didn't ask for anymore try to hit me or take my wallet.

since I live in the city...I can tell you that it's kind of a mix. You'll have really nice ppl, say hello or smile at you from time to time, or those dumbasses who (idk if purposely) would try to make you fall off the edge of a subway platform...
But my friends lives in cali and she seems nice, of course I can't judge Cali based on that, but then again...i've never been to cali either so...that's pretty much it :)

Equally mean in different ways. Someone from NY will run up and smack you with a baseball bat, whereas, someone from LA will offer you some cocaine, while someone else smacks you with a baseball bat
