I already have Kamakura penciled in, plus a trip to Mt Fuji...both on organized tours

But what Im looking for is somewhere within easy reach of Tokyo, where I can visit myself, without having to change trains, or take addtional buses...somewhere interesting, that I can spend the day walking round and yet be back in Tokyo by evening.

Anywhere you can recommend?

I know of a couple who are taking an extended vacation (2 Months) in Thailand. One is an American Citizen the other is Europen. I am wondering if they will be able to get out. They are in rural Thailand and no one has been able to contact them.

Neither of them speek any languages of Asia.

I only see people asking questions about going on their vacation into the bombed area. I do not see anyone concerned about getting out.

Does anyone know if there are flights goind out of Bangkok? Do people know if the USA is doing evacuations like they did in Lebanon? What are other countries doing for their citizens?

PS: I will go for rouughtly 3-4 months or more...and I will on my own at 17 years old...please, any advise would be helpful.

Thailand's military has seized power from Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless late-night coup, imposing martial law in what they said was a bid to unite the nation after months of political turmoil.

Tanks and heavily-armed troops -- many wearing yellow scarves to show their allegiance to Thailand's revered king -- surrounded Thaksin's office or stood guard at key points throughout the capital of Bangkok.

Bangkok's notoriously congested streets are unusually quiet and commuter trains empty, as heavily-armed Thai soldiers wearing yellow sashes patrolled key intersections.

Beyond the presence of the troops -- sporting yellow out of loyalty to King Bhumibol Adulyadej -- and tanks posted outside government sites, there were few other signs the country has suffered its first military takeover in 15 years.

I am in my second year of college in the US, but I have a g/f living in the Philippines, (Mindanao). Are there any nationally accredited colleges or universities there where I could possibly transfer credits to and complete a four year degree because I would like to move there, but I do not want to jeopardize my education by dropping out of college. Thanks.

On my forthcoming holiday in Tokyo, in addition to seeing the sites, Im desperate to really interact with the locals...but as a rather shy Gaijin, Im unsure of the best places to do so...

I speak a little, faltering Japanese, and Im eager to put it to use, but worried that my few words of Japanese will provoke more laughter than praise!

Where are the friendliest places one can interact with the people of Tokyo?
