I am in my second year of college in the US, but I have a g/f living in the Philippines, (Mindanao). Are there any nationally accredited colleges or universities there where I could possibly transfer credits to and complete a four year degree because I would like to move there, but I do not want to jeopardize my education by dropping out of college. Thanks.

Classes would also have to taught in English, because I don't know Tagalog yet.

Here's my advice:

Finish your US college education first! Let me state that once more--get your US degree first. Your girlfriend can and should wait for you to finish in the US. If she is faithful and true to you, she will be there after two years regardless.

Two years is a short wait for her, compared to you spending a 40 year sentence in a career track or job you hate but had no choice because you closed the door to a potentially great job without a diploma from a well-regarded university.

Not to say that there aren't any good universities in the Philippines but here's the scoop:

There are no universities in the Philippines other than (maybe) the Univ. of the Philippines Diliman campus that any western organization will formally recognize as comparable to a western university--regardless of the actual quality of the education served. That's a fact. You will be doing yourself and your future family a disservice by squandering a great opportunity to finish college in a US school--an opportunity most Filipinos and other foreign nationals could only dream about no matter how smart they are. Follow your head.

Where in Mindanao do you plan to enroll?

To check a list of accredited universities, visit the Commission on Higher Education's Website at http://www.ched.gov.ph/hei_dir/index.html and choose the area you want to study in.

Some universities in Mindanao that come to my mind right now are UP Mindanao, Ateneo Davao, La Salle,... you won't have much of a problem about the language since most people in Mindanao speak a dialect (cebuano, etc) and English.

You can also ask your girlfriend to teach you the language. :)

I dont know about any accredited colleges in Mindanao but if i did.. i probably would not study there for safety reasons. I would consider schools somewhere in VISAYAS region like Cebu.. ( a couple of good schools had been mentioned above already) or ****** island. * Silliman University * St. Paul University * La Salle etc. because ****** or Cebu areas are not as dangerous as Mindanao where some areas are considered "HOT SPOT" because of the rebells.

most universities in the philippines are accredited. just contact the schools you want to transfer and send them your transcript. you don't have to worry about the language used. we use english here as our medium of instructions.

try - University of the Philippines - Visayas or you could try Universities in Cebu, which is not very far from Mindanao

University of the Philippines Cebu
University of San Carlos
University of San Jose Recoletos
University of Cebu
Velez University
Cebu Doctor's University... to mention the few

First off that is so sweet of you to do that for your gf!!awww...

Okay..

Most universities here in Manila accept foreign transferees and primary medium of teaching are 85-95% in English such as De La Salle University,University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo De Manila however I'm not so sure of your choices if it was in Mindanao but definitely you can continue your college education here for as long as it's not a highly specialized one of a kind course that can only be found in your country. Good luck!

There is always an accredited school wherever you go in the Philippines. So it is not only in Manila where you can find such. Try to visit CHED's website: http://www.ched.gov.ph/

Actually, you don't need to worry about the language used in the school because English is the medium of instruction or let's say, the language used in Philippine Education especially among accredited schools.

While I agree with what everyone has said previously I must agree with Well. Take it from me, I'm a Filipino-American living in Manila.

Finish your college degree there in the States first. If you are serious about moving here (and staying here I gather), you will find that a US University degree will take you further and will earn you more than one earned here locally.

And regarding the University of the Philippines, as far as I know unless both your parents are alumni of UP, you will have a near nil chance of being accepted in UP as an applicant from a foreign country.

Where in mindanao? It is difficult to travel from one city to another, so you have to specify the city.

Most schools credit your subjects. They will just compare the course description and number of units. However, you will have to take required subjects such as english subjects, filipino subjects, history and political science. Also, english is the medium of instruction but you have to know bisaya if you will be staying in Mindanao. People there knows tagalog but bisaya is the dialect there.

I don't really know what University you would like to transfer. If you have decided the name of the UNIVERSITY already, simply type the name of the school in the search engine and see some contact informations. Maybe you can just give them an e-mail or a phone call regarding to your situation.

There are several good universities in Mindanao. It depends on where you are going to live. If you are in Davao, check out Ateneo de Davao University and if you are in Zamboanga, check out Western Mindanao State University. Ok? Good luck!!!
