I already have Kamakura penciled in, plus a trip to Mt Fuji...both on organized tours

But what Im looking for is somewhere within easy reach of Tokyo, where I can visit myself, without having to change trains, or take addtional buses...somewhere interesting, that I can spend the day walking round and yet be back in Tokyo by evening.

Anywhere you can recommend?

Nikko for nature and history.

Yokohama for a different urban environment (the waterfront is nice... kind of like Miami or Sydney).

Okutama or Chichibu for mountains and forests.

Kyoto can even be a day trip, if you don't mind leaving really early and spending $250 on train tickets...

How about Odaiba?

Miraikan

TOYOTA Mega Web

If you have courage to be naked and enter the onsen (spa).
Oedo-Onsen Monogatari

(I like this place. You don't need to bring anything, but money. You can shop everything with the tag on your arm. You adjust the fare when you get out. )

Visit Botejyu. Try Okonomiyaki.(Japanese style pizza)
It is on the 3rd floor of the VenusFort (same building with MegaWeb).

Have you visited "Kawagoe"?
Kawagoe is called "Little Edo",
(What is "Edo" ?http://www.us-japan.org/edomatsu/
because many old Japanese houses and architectures which are built at Edo periods are still remaining. It is not the "best" but nice place to visit once in a sunny day.
