First of all, please realize that the international community in Japan doesn't only consist of Americans but other foreigners too.
If you live in Tokyo, Roppongi is a big foreigner hangout area. Tons of bars and tons of foreigners. Shibuya is also another area where you can find foreigners. Tokyo has a population of 20 million or more people, so you'll find foreigners all over the place. I live in a city of about 330,000 and there are 2 bars and a Starbucks that are both famous for being foreigner hangouts. If you live outside of Tokyo, then ask around. I can promise you that there will be at least one foreigner hangout in every decent sized city.

It really depends on WHERE in Japan you are going. Usually the Irish or British pubs have a lot of "gaijin". And in Roppongi or Shinjuku you should be able to find some Americans on the street and ask them where they hang out. If all else fails, find a Hard Rock Cafe. They always have Americans there.

Where exactly are you moving to?
In Tokyo, the suburb of Roppongi. There was an Irish pub I went to that was full of Europeans and Americans. I hated it because it was just like being at home so I didn't stay long!

If your in Tokyo or Osaka it won't take you long to find the local hang out. However if you end up some place like me you may find it harder. I see on average about one foriener once every 2 months. I only have one English speeking friend who is Aulstralia. We meet up about once a month and ironically go drinking at a bar called "America" Good Luck

If you are in Osaka, they hang out in Umeda and Namba. Namba has clubs and many British/Irish pubs. Tennoji has a pub called "Tins Hall" which is very popular among foreigners (they serve Thanksgiving dinner there!)
The largest foreigner population is in Tokyo, though, for sure. Where will you be?

You will probably work or study with a few, assuming you are going to teach English or study Japanese. From them, you will be introduced to the Gaijin scene. It's a small world, especially if you hang around a few years.

If you're gonna be living near a military base, make sure you make friends with them. They can get you in on-base and you won't feel so distant.

You will find the biggest compilation of Americans on and near the Naval Ship-Yards , the one that our ships come into.
I hope that helps you out tremendously

There's loads of foreigners in Roppongi, Tokyo, that's why I stay away.
Sorry, but I just can't stand it there.
