Israelis: What is one thing you would tell a foreigner who is coming to Israel on study abroad for the first time?

There is an article on YN about Ron Arad that I just read. After it is a comment that disturbs me. It is not the comment in itself that disturbs me, but the fact that I can now see the logic behind it and can agree with it. Am I becoming cynical? I had so many hopes until I lived in E Jerusalem and went to this forum?

A comment reads:

Title: Israelis are Pathetic

Text: Since when is it other countries' responsibility to care about Israelis, especially Germany?

If Israel wasn't filled with lefty cowards, they would just go into Lebanon or Gaza after Arad got kidnapped, take 1,000 arab men and offered a trade. if the arabs wouldn't respond, those 1000 men would be immediately executed. the arabs would quickly lose any interest in attacking jews, when the ratio of kills would become 1/1000.

inhumane? perhaps, but trust you me, it's only force force that will work.

A friend kindly bought me a lovely book full of Jewish jokes. Now, my question to you all is: are you up for a bit of humour? I don't know if everyone will appreciate all the jokes, but if the majority would like, I'll be happy to post some jokes later tonight when I get home...

So just let me know...

This same question was posted on the Ramadan section (about the Ramadan section users) and I voted for myself on that section (but I got 11 thumbs down, lol).

Now who do you think is the most interresting person on this section?

would be states. This is of course 100 % true.

Now will Mark please acknowledge that it wasn't the Jews who stopped that partition plan from happening! They said yes to it - it was the surrounding Arab countries that rejected it. This is verifiable fact - check any history book.

Why won't Mark and others just be fair and acknowledge this?

when the Hamas Charter openly states: 'Israel will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.'?
Hamas wants to destroy Israel and openly admits it:

ARTICLE 28

'The Arab states surrounding Israel are required to open their borders to the Jihad fighters, the sons of Arab and Islamic peoples...'

AND perhaps most tellingly:
'*** 'Israel, by virtue of being Jewish and of having a Jewish population, defies Islam and the Muslims.'

ARTICLE 7

'...The Prophet, prayer and peace be upon him, said: 'The Time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry ;O Muslim, there is a Jew hiding behind me,come and kill him!'

ARTICLE 13

'Peace initiatives and international conferences... are all contrary to the beliefs of the Islamic Resistance Movement.'

Jerusalem is a holy city to the Jews, Christians, and Muslims. How does this fact affect the political situation in Israel today?

This involves the unification of Syria,Jordan,Palestine and Lebanon. I can't imagine a more effective means of bringing peace to the region and in any event this was the compass of historical Syria.

This is a remark made in the R&S section, it made me laugh wryly and I thought it might amuse you too. The remark was part of a question and wasn't directed at anyone in particular:

'If Jesus could see what you'd all done to Christianity, I think he would cry.'

I think someone hasn't received proper religious education lessons...

Anyway, just thought it might raise a smile :)

Let’s say sometime in the future a Palestinian state is created that includes all or most of the territory of the West Bank.

Would I as an American Jew be allowed to live there? Would I eventually be permitted to apply for citizenship?

What if the inhabitants of a small settlement unanimously decided that they want to revoke their Israeli citizenship and take Palestinian citizenship provide that they were allowed to say in their homes. Would they be accepted?

What if a quarter million settlers said the same thing, would that be allowed?

Just something to think about.

It's plain to see in these photos on the BBC website:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/picture_gallery/07/middle_east_mid_east_nightlife/html/1.stm

Israel supporters will say that it shows the benefits of focusing on prosperity rather than violence; Israel haters will say it demonstrates the deprivation of the Palestinians.

I'm not taking sides - I just thought you might find the photos interesting, and I can certify that the first five are a fair reflection of life here in my home city of Tel Aviv

Londoner In Israel

If put myself in Israeli's shoes and see things from Israeli's view I do understand all this self defense and security, precautions etc.. I refer to paperback's question about tough checkpoints.

What selfdefense or precaution got to do with giving people a hard time (mistreatment) at checkpoints? Why is there a collective punishment? I do understand security/precaution reasons, but why are ordinary people are mistreated?

"Moneymaker" may say again that "ordinary people" can be terrorists. Well, he might be right. They can. But should you not give anybody the benefit of the doubt first?

Why do have pregnant women give birth at checkpoints? Why are people beaten up for no reason? Why are ambulances being put on hold? Unexpected closure of checkpoints etc?

Why are is the Israelis army acting so rude?

Please do not get me wrong. I am against violence in general. I do not support any violence act not matter where it is coming from.

Palestinians are part of the Arab people. The Israelis are just Israelis. Why won't Saudi Arabia make place for the Palestinians because it's so much bigger than Israel? That way, Palestinians can be with their own people and live in much bigger territory. Thoughts?

Yesterday WORLDLUV asked me to qualify a passing comment I made about this, so I am now doing so :)

The 1920 Nebi Musa riots took place on April 4th and 7th in the Old City of Jerusalem. By 10.30 am on April 4, almost 70,000 Arabs had congregated in the city square, and Arab gangs had already been attacking Jews in the Old City for over an hour. From the balcony of the Arab club, inflammatory anti-Jewish rhetoric was being delivered, much of it by Hajj Amin al-Husayni. The Arab mob ransacked the Jewish quarter, beating many people, looting shops and homes. The Toras chaim yeshiva was raided and set on fire. During the next 3 hours, 160 Jews were injured and seriously hurt.
Muslim eyewitness Khalil al-Sakakini: 'Stones were being thrown at the Jews, I saw them covered in dust and blood. The crowd was yelling 'Muhammad's religion was born with the sword'.
