There is an article on YN about Ron Arad that I just read. After it is a comment that disturbs me. It is not the comment in itself that disturbs me, but the fact that I can now see the logic behind it and can agree with it. Am I becoming cynical? I had so many hopes until I lived in E Jerusalem and went to this forum?

A comment reads:

Title: Israelis are Pathetic

Text: Since when is it other countries' responsibility to care about Israelis, especially Germany?

If Israel wasn't filled with lefty cowards, they would just go into Lebanon or Gaza after Arad got kidnapped, take 1,000 arab men and offered a trade. if the arabs wouldn't respond, those 1000 men would be immediately executed. the arabs would quickly lose any interest in attacking jews, when the ratio of kills would become 1/1000.

inhumane? perhaps, but trust you me, it's only force force that will work.

Maybe if Israel was as immoral as most of it's arab neighbours, they would finally be relieved and teach them cowards some lessons they will never forget?

I don't know, but is trying to be moral not more of a sign of fear towards the enemy (why else the need to be good towards those who have nothing but bad intentions towards you when you didn't have any bad intentions to begin with, maybe being ruthless is the only thing those people understand?)

I would also be afraid of the growing of a leftist mentality amongst Israeli's. I hope the younger generation won't fall for that.

are you advocating mass genocide ?

but, paperback, hiding yourself is a part of the game... that's why the army has military bases. they don't put themselves out there to be caught either do they ? and how much less cowardly is it to shoot someone from up in the sky in an airstrike, than for someone to take cover in an urban area ? not much if you ask me, especially when you use those jets on someone that doesn't even own any. it's like shooting a blind man in the face.

and, israel didn't really mind attacking civilian targets, you can't use this excuse because we all know the death tolls, these aren't the kind of figures that you can have and still claim to be morally superior to those that you are fighting.

This is a classic economics question. For example, it is analogous to a situation where the punishment for every crime would be the death penalty. Clearly crime rates would drop, but that doesn't mean the world is a better place. Commiting acts that you suggest would succeed in preventing kidnappings (I assume), but it wouldn't make the world any better for Israel or anyone else.

Lefties are pathetic! PATHETIC! COWARDS!

It is not so horrible that they are cowards, but what is vital here is that Jews (lefties) are ruining Israel with their own hands. Arabs simply squeal and accuse, and Jews keep apologizing and turning against their own.

Dark picture, isn't it? It is real though.

I can understand the 'logic' behind the suggestion. But the reality is that the Israelis would never behave that way; they strive to be moral even when facing an amoral and evil enemy.

But I hear what you're saying. It's similar, surely, to what's happening with Gaza right now: rocket attacks being launched from there and killing innocent Israelis, but the Israelis don't go in heavy handed because they don't want to kill innocent Palestinians, and they know the terrorists station themselves amidst the innocent civilians.

I hope that you're just reponding reflexively to a frustration that you feel about the situation! One must really worry about one's sanity when killing 1,000 from your enemies for one of yours sounds logical.

You think you've got a problem on your hands now, the sign up line for suicide bombers would be seen from space then! Take a look at the charts for deaths on both sides month by month and you'll notice that the deaths of Israeli civilians spike on the same curve that Palestinian civilians does. It is the endless cycle of tit for tat. The more Palestinians die, the more they lash out in kind. Think about it.

Israeli mentality is the spartan mentality. Israel vs. the world.

"Our race is the master race. We are divine gods on this planet. We are as different from the inferior races as they are from insects. In fact, compared to our race, other races are beasts and animals, cattle at best. Other races are considred as human excrement. Our destiny is to rule over the inferior races. Our earthly kingdom will be ruled by our leader with a rod of iron. The masses will lick our feet, and serve us as our slaves."
Menachem Begin.

yeah, i don't live there so i don't know if i would get to that point. i don't wish to see the other side as less than human, but we've offered the arabs peace innumerable times, and they keep saying they will settle for no less than the destruction of israel. even freedom f&¢* answering you here calls for the destruction of israel and is too dense to realize that will only bring more suffering to the arabs.
if the arabs didn't accept over 60% of the land in 1948, or 100% of the west bank in 2000, i don't know when they will ever accept anything. seal the borders and build the walls, and let them fend for themselves. they can provide their own water and power and food. oh i forgot, they don't grow food, they only destroy working greenhouses.
okay i guess i can see the logic too. it might be the only thing that the other side understands as well.
