I was wondering how difficult the hike is, and how long it usually takes? i would appreciate any insight. Thanks

I was referring to the snake path, not the tram or straight up incline. Thanks for all you answers so far!

I did it years ago - it wasn't too difficult to do - but you need to do it before the sun comes up - otherwise it gets really hot.

Good Luck!!!

There's the easy way and the hard way. The easy way is the Roman Road, which is essentially the ramp the Romans built during the course of the siege to assault the base. This is more or less a straight upwards slope. The hard way is the Snake Path, a narrow winding path that hugs its way up the mountain. This is longer and more arduous, but ultimately more fulfilling once you reach the summit. As for times, its really a matter of your own personal pace, and I don't remember how long they suggest it takes. The best time to hike up is immediately before dawn, so as to achieve the fort with the rising sun. Even if that doesn't interest you, hiking masada during the daytime is ill-advised. It is located in the middle of the desert and there is no shade; it will be a hot and dry hike up the mountainside. It should only really be attempted in the early morning or evening, with preference towards morning because then there's light.

Depending on the hikers (physical fitness, climbing expertise, size of group), navigating the snake path may take an average of around 40 minutes, more or less. "The trail is not hard and it's absolutely safe thanks to the steps cut out in stone." See 7th item here:

Many people do go up the snake path. (I did it years ago. Once upon a time, there was no cable car.) The path is for those who enjoy a good hike and want to experience the climb and the views along the way. It's essential to bring lots of water as the climate is very dry as well as hot.
Many hikers prefer to climb the mountain via the more direct path (Roman ramp) and descend via the snakepath. Descent takes about 1/2 the time as the climb --around 15 or 20 minutes. (Anyone with knee problems should avoid going down this way.)

Edit: Joe-the -man, there were a few who survived and were taken as Roman slaves.
Also, at this identical point in history (the destruction of the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem) several families fled north to Pekiin where they farmed the land until recently.

Snake Path Masada

Yes, I have done it twice, once when I was almost 10 and once when I was 19.

And no, it is not difficult at all, taking into consideration that you are going up a path that is a steady incline.

It takes about 30 - 45 minutes depending on how fast you go.

Also, keep in mind that one of the biggest issues is not the incline but the fact that its in the desert. That means if you hike up when the sun is at its strongest that may affect the difficulty. In both cases when I went up, I went before sunrise. Then, I watched the sunrise from the top. I recommend you do that if possible.

Oh, and coming down is a lot easier. (;

there are 2 paths through which you can hike up massada.
the ramp... which is basically a slope that climbs about 120 meters (360 feet) over about 500 m. (a third of a mile). the downside of it... it's a long and roundabout drive
the snake path climbs about 320 meters (almost 1000 feet) and is quite steep but do-able. i saw a couple of soldiers who RAN it in 15 minutes. for me, at 48 and ... er... well... "hefty"... it would take an hour and some wheezing and panting.

edit
ultra... do you think the people who killed themselves and their families up there are anyone's ancestors?

First time up in 67 with my parents, up the snake path, last part up metal ladder and rope, wonderful sunrise over Edom mountains, fantastic experience. Today much easier most way by cable cart the last 80 yards up by foot, much more to see now-days as more was unearthed.

I hiked it in the middle of the night to see the sunrise. It was sort of difficult, but I was terribly out of shape, so most people shouldn't find it too bad. I don't remember how long it took, it was 25 years ago.

It was challenging, I wouldn't say difficult.
Unfortunately, I dont remember how long it took but try to do it before the sun comes up for a couple of reasons:
1. Its cooler out
2. It's one of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen!
Good luck!

Yeah but do it before it gets hot. It is best to do it when it is cool. Also take plenty of water. I carry a hydropack. Takes me a while but I walk slow and poke about. It is not difficult at all. You will enjoy it I am sure.
