What are tempo runs? Why are they done? How are they incorporated into a running routine?

ALSO, what is the difference between Tempo Runs and Time Trials?

(as you can tell, I'm totally new to running and in the mood to learn.)

I know that some sprinting greats did this, and I was wondering if there's any benefit to it.

There is considerable pain before and after sprints, but during the actual race shin splints are not a problem so I'm wondering if they physically prevent me from achieving my best times.

I'm a highschool runner and have been injured since this fall. My injury (knees) prevents me from doing any running at all, but I miss my friends on the team so much.

I need suggestions for ways to be involved with the team even if I'm not running with them. I'm also looking for good cross training activities (I go to the gym, but it makes me extremely depressed to eliptical inside alone). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

When i run with any other sock other than my smallest running socks, the material under only my right foot bunches up. Could this be a shoe problem or a biomechanical problem with my running. Also what is the best socks I could use to make sure they stay in one spot.

Is it okay to do a four mile run with 2 to 4lb weights in your hands? Will there be any damage to the ligaments in the arms or extra stress on the tendons that would promote injury in the area? I'm just worried about the extra jarring on the upper body.

i use an Adidas A3 Traxion Shoe...is great, it has a stone shield, is comfortable, is moist free and it has a comfortable heel....but i need a change, i am in the US Army, and as a soldier, i feel obligated to provide my feet, the best possible running shoe...comfortability, stoine shield, flexibility is a MUST....any comments out there??? ohh, PLEASE no New Balance or Asics Shoes...let's keep the battle between Adidas, Reeboks, Nike and Jordan Brand...and Saucony (maybe) i don't care about the brand really, but i need the BEST Running Shoe. I have not really trained much in the last 4 years, but have PB's of 33:35 for 10k Road, and 15:21 for 5k Road, both of which I achieved when I was 17, and only doing 10-15 miles a week of serious training.

I have resolved to start training again, and have set the goals of running 10k in 30 minutes or less and 5k in 14 minutes or less by next January. Could any of you give me any advice on how to build mileage and train to do this?

What's the best way to pace myself durng a 5K?

Aslo, what do I bring?

I get cramps a lot when I run, usually towards the beginning. I know they happen to many people...and I was wondering: Is it better to run through the cramps, or walk/stop until they go away? How long does it usually take them to go away? Why do you get cramps when you run? Any tips on making them less/non-existant?

I am a high school cross country and track (distance) runner. I recently got a stress fracture in the 2nd metatarsal bone of my right foot (the bone behind my second toe). I was fitted with a walking cast (a removable boot type of thing). I need to stay in shape some how and certainly/unfortunately cannot run.

How can I keep in shape? Are any ways best for runners? I've heard of underwater running as a good low-impact workout. Any details? Anything else that does require a pool, and doesn't put heavy pressure or bend my foot in the front?

Thanks!

My right hip hurts. It hurts the most in the groin area , but it feels like the whole hip hurts. If it helps it hurts the most when i start running, like right off the start line, until i get in my groove, then the pain goes away somewhat. Also when i lift my leg up toward my chest, then i put it down i hear a popping noise. It started to hurt after i hadnt run for a long time, then i ran 8 miles with leg weights on. I dont know what a stress fracture feels like, but i can run. I really need the pain to go away, because track is in full swing, and i can t run as well as i want to.

I am a junior in high school and its my first year doing track. last meet I ran a 2:11 (59,72 split for 400). I am looking to get my time down to a 2:00 in two weeks. Generally I train with the distance team and the workouts seem to be helping (16x300's on 3 min intervals last practice). Also I am looking for a way to get my 400 time down (55 is my pr) to a 53. Thanks!

If I use the pace group do I need to "tip" the pacer? and if the pace turns out to be too slow or too fast for me, is it bad etiquette to break off from the group and run on my own?

I'm a runner and would like a better understanding of how your lactic acid threshold can improve training. Also, is there a formula to find out what it is?
