There is considerable pain before and after sprints, but during the actual race shin splints are not a problem so I'm wondering if they physically prevent me from achieving my best times.

Shin splints are caused by muscle imbalance. Running does nothing for the front part of the legs, so you must use alternate exercises to build up the front of the leg.

To treat shin splints, lie face down in bed with your toes hanging off the bed. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Repeat many times. Do the exercise every day and your problem will go away.

You need to treat the shin splints. What you are experiencing is a swelling in the muscles on the front of your lower leg. Massage and ice can help. There are some exercise that can relieve this also. If left untreated they can become worse. The pain will eventually affect your running.

It doesnt hurt while you are racing because your race pain is stronger than your shin pain and you are concentrated on your race. I bet after your race it hurts pretty badly. It will only continue to get worse until you cant even walk or get a stress fracture. take a break before you arent able to run anymore and go on the bike instead+rice treatment for 1-2 weeks.

Dude this will hecka effect your running times period. If it hurts to run fast, then your probably don't want to run right?
Shin splints can lead to small but painful fractures. Trust me I know.

Unless there is some subconcirnce self governing they should not affect your time. BUT you will make them worse and worse if you keep running on them without allowing them to heal. Train on soft ground, wear good shoes and absolutely don't run on paved areas or downhill.
