The great thing about track is that there are so many areas that you can try. Please do go out, and when you do, tell your coach that you're not sure where you fit, and ask him to help you find your best event. He'll work with you, and maybe it will be in the 400 instead of in a short sprint. Maybe it will be a longer distance like 800 or 1600. You also can try the jumping events like long jump, high jump or triple jump. I didn't have great speed, and I ended up doing all those events. I loved jumping!
I will also mention that there are throwing events like shot and discus that you can try, but since you mentioned running, the first part of this probably is where to start.
Bottom line: Do it, and don't be afraid to lean on the coach's opinion of where your strength lies.

Hey, thats a GREAT IDEA! You can get soo much better. I was an average sprinter as well when I joined this spring, and now I am the 2nd best on the team! You will get so much better, and its fun as well! You can also run mid-distance events such as the 400 meter, which doesn't require the fastest sprint in the world.
You might even want to try something like long or high jump, which works on technique as well.

Of course u should join track. It's not about how good u are but as how much u will improve. When i started track last year, i had never done track before and i spent last year on jv and now i have a very good chance of competing on the varsity level. Track is also fun and u will meet new ppl. so go for it =]

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" When I first started track, I wasn't the fastest and you don't have to be. It's your first year so have fun with it. You have to enjoy it first so that you can do well. For me, throughout the years I actually began to improve and got my mile time down to 4:44. You should definitely join. If you don't like it for whatever reason, you have the chance to quit (I don't recommend it). Good luck!

Joining track is a great idea! This is my first year and I'm not that good yet but I also have improved and I like it a lot.

No, because the thing is that track and field is an individual sport. If you have the commitment to get better, you will! Just practice hard and do your best during practice.

No way!! joining always makes you better. you get the help from coaches and support from your team. and sooner or later you may get better. plus track isn't all about sprinting. there's distance, throwing, jumping everything. you never know what you can excell at!

HECK NO! track is all about getting better! im a sucky sprinter and i still do it! i've gotten sooooo much better! plus its way fun i love it! go for it!!!!

i say go for it i use 2 be a average sprinter my 40 time was 5.6 but now im running 4.94 so i say go for it you will get alot better.
