I am a high school cross country and track (distance) runner. I recently got a stress fracture in the 2nd metatarsal bone of my right foot (the bone behind my second toe). I was fitted with a walking cast (a removable boot type of thing). I need to stay in shape some how and certainly/unfortunately cannot run.

How can I keep in shape? Are any ways best for runners? I've heard of underwater running as a good low-impact workout. Any details? Anything else that does require a pool, and doesn't put heavy pressure or bend my foot in the front?

Thanks!

Biking. Swimming. Weight training.

Swimming is your absolute best bet. Swimming will help maintain and increase your endurance and will help keep your body in shape. Aquajogging is also good for injury recovery and works the core quite a bit.

AVOID THE BIKE! That metatarsal is very fragile right now and riding the bike increases the pressure on those bones and you do NOT want to further irritate it.

I can't think of anything that doesn't use the feet to absorb pressure. I was always put in the pool for my PT from lower-extremity injuries because everything else can irritate the injured area...

Good luck!!!

Stay off of it as much as possible to speed up your recovery time, the best way to stay in shape with a stress fracture is by aqua jogging. Aqua jogging is where you wear an aqua jogger ( A foam pad that straps around your waist to keep you afloat. ) then run in place, or very slowly around the pool, it keeps all the muscles you need to run in shape by using water risistance which doesn't cause a lot of impact on your bones. It also helps with your cardio.

If you can't get an aqua jogger, then swimming laps or treading water are great as well.

Heres a link to purchase aqua joggers http://www.aquajogger.com/iwwida.pvx?;products_no_tree?cat=AQUAJOGGER?comp=001

The underwater running is aquajogging. You have a boyancy belt and move as though you're running. Aquajogging in probably your best bet because it is no impact, but similar to running. You'll probably feel really silly the first few times you try it, but recovering is the most important thing you can do.

Yeah. Biking is really good esp. if you have a stationary bike. Swimming laps is also good for you and go to the weight room a couple times the week just to stay strong.
