I'm a highschool runner and have been injured since this fall. My injury (knees) prevents me from doing any running at all, but I miss my friends on the team so much.

I need suggestions for ways to be involved with the team even if I'm not running with them. I'm also looking for good cross training activities (I go to the gym, but it makes me extremely depressed to eliptical inside alone). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ask to be a helper/handler. Your coach could need help at the meet with all the rookies, to get them warmed up, signed in for their races and equipment at hand, like shot/discus/javelin getting weighed before competing, you have the baton(we are allowed to bring our own team one), he may need help at practices too (I know I like it when someone is helping another event while I'm concentrating on different athletes in another event when we are doing event specific workouts.
You can do some aqua training, you'll still run but not get the pounding, do core body exercises(upper body weights) and medicine ball exercises

Been there! One word: Manager. Everyone else who has posted is dead on, offer to help out. My senior year I couldn't swim so I took over as manager for the team. I got to go to all meets, had the option of going to practices and got to be on deck for everything, it was the next best thing to being in the water! I didn't miss anything and I was able to help my teammates out.

Good luck and get well soon!

I have been in your shoes as I missed all of my junior year of college with a torn hamstring. Best advice, go to practices and help out. Use a stopwatch, help your teammates stretch, just be there to cheer them on while doing their workout. It will mean alot to your teammates that you are still there even though you are not running, and it will keep you involved in the sport and keep you focused. Good Luck.

I cross train with biking and swimming, both are low impact and should be OK for your knee injury.

You can still attend the meets, right? Ask your coach if you can help out with stuff like record keeping, so you can still be there with the team and cheer them on.
