There seem to be so many different styles i was wondering how you officially start a new martial art. For example when you start a new religion you have to have over 10,000 followers for it to be officially recognised on forms for employment etc.

I attended my first white belt Taekwondo lesson this week. I learned some of the basic stances. I forget what each is called and would like to know so I can practice. I need the names of what it is called when you:

bow after you are in "jury-ut" (forgive the spelling)

go into a ready stance (bring fists up to face, step left, and bring fists down to hips)

return to "jury-ut", bow, and say 'thank you sir'

I appreciate it - thank you.

I'm not in a situation where I need to know how to fight right now, but i'm pretty sure sometime soon in the future i'll need to know. Anyways I know there is no one step to ultimate fighting skills, but what is a good strategy and/or good way to take down an aggressor? (example) Like punch to the gut then a knee to the nose

i know that other martial arts sometimes have a spiritual side like karate and tai-kwondo (or however u spell it!) also i know that yoga asks u to meditate an some people have had spiritual encounters with it. so is kickboxing just for fitness or does it have an element of spirituality in it???

Three men. Same height, weight. Same amount of training, fighting experience. One Muay thai, one BJJ, one Tae Kwon do.

Who wins in a fight?

Hi, could you please tell me more about these martial arts, mainly wu shu and won hwa do? Ive never heard about these two. I have opportunity to join training of one of these 3 martial arts, but i dont know which one would be most suitable for me? Im 18 yo girl, slightly plump and short and im NOT used to hard physical activity. Id like to learn some martial art which is not only about fighting but involves philosophy as well . I decided i will start some sport and i already do yoga and occassionally swim, but i feel i need something different as well. I dont like aerobic or gym and im not a fan of collective games because im terrible and i dont want others to be angry at me when i dont catch the ball :-) So could you please tell me which of these would you recommend to me?

-Talk bunches of trash about how dangerous they're and how they would put me in hospital in one breath.

-back off try to claim they're a peaceful person who doesn't believe in fighting.

-claim they're too deadly to spar then beg to be let go.

-Try to get in their rigid stance even when they're getting hit/kicked repeatly

-start to throw wild haymaker and windmill punches

-found out their punches miss 90% of the time so they rush toward the opponent

-fall down after reciving few well place blows and lay there crying or unconsicous

-start to taunt the opponent from safe distance via email, through friend, etc... and tell the opponent that he/she got lucky and that next time they will really hurt the opponent

-run away every time they see the opponent or simply avoid the event that opponent will be at.

I have see this so MANY time and even experienced a several in gym or friendly spar outside of gym. I have hear all kind of crap about how people claim to be so dangerous only to

I would like to start learning a martial art, so i feel more confident, and can protect myself and family if needed. Should i start Judo, or karate, or any other?

2006-09-21 01:06:27 · 42 answers · asked by Claire B 2

I had done a little bit of tae kwon do when I was little. I liked the basics they taught, but I only advanced to a yellow belt because my family had to move; for this reason, I cant judge the effectiveness of the system. Many say that it is flashy and mainly for competition. Some say that high kicks and spin kicks are not useful in real fights. But I believe that high kicks and the speed of it must have some value.

Then I tried ninjutsu in my college last year. It's part of Hayes' system. While everything is useful and devastating, I felt that it was too defensive and hard to master.

Then I checked out Okinawan karate. It seems pretty cool, but I do not know if it's effective or not.

The question is: which one should I do? Is it possible to do 2 at the same time? (karate and ninjutsu?)
P.S. I'm not very flexible, therefore ninjutsu is the easiest for me. But if my flexibility can improve as I practice, I do not mind doing tkd or karate.

I'm a girl in martial arts. I've been training for the past 2 and a half years, and the guys at school keep trying to start fights with me but I can't fight them because my parents will never let me get my black belt if I hurt them but thats the only way to stop them.
