Well, first let me say that i'm not surprised that your cousin got beat using Judo..dont get me wrong, the style is good, I use it myself, the problem is that too many instructors don't train judo students for real situations, only for tournaments.

As for Krav Maga...Its a good style...I've seen it, fought against it, had a hard time defending against it. It was opriginally developed for and is still used by the Israeli military and law enforcement agencies. It is a style that so few people are familiar with that most won't know how to defend against it. The main problem with it is that.b ecasue itis so uncommon, finding a school is difficult but if you can find one...go for it.

jodumofo has it right.

2 against 1 odds doesn't ever really look that good no matter what martial art you take. Krav Maga might be good but I can't really say that it would be much more effective than anything else. Running away or learning how to protect yourself would be the best bet. Yes you can learn Krav Maga but I don't think that it would even 2on1 odds.
I have a friend who teaches Krav Maga because it is the up and coming money maker for himself and the gym he works at. So he is a licensed teacher and he says that he has been teaching it for 7 years so his clients. Truth is that his gym sent him to a trainign seminar on the weekend in Los Angeles and at the end, everyone became licensed Krav Maga teachers. I know that not all teachers are like my friend but if you do find a Krav Maga teacher, more than likely they are almost as new to the martial art as you the student are.

The fact that you were beaten on the street has nothing to do with Judo...it has to do with how you were trained, and the effectiveness of your training! Too many schools do not teach enough contact and street common sense training! Street fighters are unique in that their fighting usually contains different techniques which if they are true street fighters have been tested and tested throughout their survival on the streets. If all you have trained for is tournament Judo, then your survival against good, strong, experienced street fighters is 50/50, and the rest is brute strength and toughness! Will Krav Maga help? Yes, because we do not have rules, we do not pull punches, in a good certified Krav Maga school you learn how to survive on he street against 1 to 4 attackers. What is amazing is your inability to get one of the guys in a cross strange hold; or even an arm lock!!!!!! Then I would be concerned with your physical toughness!

As a Expert in Krav Maga and a 2d (Dan) Black Belt in Judo, I'm a little confused on your lack of ability to win!

Krav maga. Created by the Israelis for military combat. Quick to learn and proven to be effective. That ground stuff is good for the ring. But not ideal for self defense. Ain't no rules in a life or death situation

Martial arts does not make you invincible or protected from the wrongs of the world. I have learned that learning martial arts only loweres the percentage of you getting hurt, getting killed, or jumped... it isnt 100%. No boxer has 100% wins. Also getting jumped is a surprise attack, judo is usually 1on1. So, he shouldnt feel bad... consider it a learning experience and he will think about the jump in his mind, and better prepare himself for next time. i dont think people should get discouraged because they did not react like superman or some hero in a movie... real life is different.

I study aikido and have be in situations with 1 person, 2 people and 3 people. Things are so unpredictable... the environment was different everytime, things in the way, different attacks. Its very diffucult to deal with all that at once. I look back on things I could have done differently, areas I need improvment... but I must say.. it worked.

BLAH BLAH The reason your cousin got jumped in the first place is cause he didn't use the number one rule of self defense. See trouble and AVOID it. Who's to say one of them didnt have a gun, knife or pipe. You need to be constantly vigilant.

Constantly be looking for trouble, especially when you are alone in unfamiliar territory. What if those to guys were only half of the fight, and there were some more dudes ahead to trap you in. In a fight there are no rules, and there are some very sick people out there.

That being said if he couldn't get away, maybe he could give up his wallet. Not a sure fire way to avoid being attacked, but if he was jumped, he's probably gunna lose it anyway.

As for actually being under attack by two people there alot of different opinions as to what to do. However, most people would agree that not being attacked would be better.

Too bad. Now you see why no one form is effective in real situations. Krav is good if you can use it effectively. Grabing and throwing punches all over the place is ineffective if you don't know what you're doing. I've seen it used. I'm not versed enough to stand up to it. But it can be real effective in multiple attacker situations.

Man, sometimes I just wonder about people.

Wing Chun? Sorry... I digress...

Chances are fighting two people any style isn't going to be that great. That being said I think Krav Maga would do well, they teach you how to be brutally effective and instinctual. Your cousin getting jumped by two guys was what did him in, not Judo.

He could have eye gouged or groin kicked or done anything to get out of that situation, chances are he wrapped up with one while another took some shots.

In an adrenaline based situation sometimes it is not so easy to use your head. Two on one is hard for any Martial Art to really counter, despite what some people may think. While it seems easy to say "eye gouge/vein rip/knee the groin one dude, then take out the other" it honestly is not that easy. People protect themselves, and two people come at you hard and fast it is going to be hard to get off an effective technique. Your only shot is hoping you can take one guy out of the fight completely by total devastation, by breaking something or having a weapon.

Two guys on one, Krav Maga will teach you how to keep your head in that situation, how best to minimize damage to yourself and end the confrontation, but any Krav Maga class is going to be realistic and have you trying to do what you can to escape the situation, not Bruce Lee two guys and have them laying on the ground while you remain standing over them.

Two guys vs. One, are bad odds. Even worst odds when they get the jump on you and capture the initiative and element of surprise. Then they dictate how the encounter starts and that places you, no matter what style you are in a bad situation.

There are a ton of Pros to Krav Maga as with any Martial Art, however Krav Maga has a specific use and purpose. So the Pros usually are training to be more aware of your surroundings, body positioning during attacks to minimize damage to yourself, how to inflict maximum damage on your opponent the quickest way possible so that you can remove yourself. They will teach you how to punch, kick, knee, elbow, and gouge. They train hard, and they train it to be easy to learn. Grandmaster Imi Sde Or developed it so that any person of any fitness level and any size should be able to use it effectively.

I think it is a great self defense Martial Art, it teaches you more than just moves, but also how to have a mindset of awareness and how to not look like a target.

Cons: One major con is that it is hard to find a good Krav Maga place to train at. There are some martial art clubs that say they train Krav, but are low level certified instructors that don't truly teach it properly or under stress, they usually use it as a way of getting people into their dojo and study their own martial art. You don't get a chance to practice many of the moves full speed on an individual who is really trying to hurt you. This is an unfortunate thing with many Martial Arts, especially ones in which there are no tournaments, or moves that have high probability to injure someone. Don't get me wrong, you will Spar in Krav Maga, you swill spar hard.

Hope that is of help, for the record I have fought more than one guy and won by using Judo. I have fought more than one guy and lost using everything I knew. It just depends on the circumstance, 2 vs. 1 with the two jumping a guy. Hard to get first strike in there or dictate the fight, it is a bad situation you best bet is to get seperation and run away.
