Safe as in what I guess? Everyone who has posted above me is right.
They are safe in the fact that you will not die from it, or even develop life threatening problems from it.
You will develop severe arthritis as well as cause joint injuries in your fingers and hands. Eventually calcium deposits will build up and seriously limit range of motion.
That being said there are safe ways to bone condition without having long lasting injuries. Hitting a heavy bag is just as good for killing the nerves in a striking area, as well as doing some bone conditioning.
Breaking boards a lot? It depends on how you are doing it, knife hand isn't so bad, but closed fists, backhands, or ridgehands are most definately going to mess you up long term.
Breaking boards is almost always a confidence builder, it isn't necessary to make a stronger or tougher fighter.
I would avoid any hard surface bone conditioning, it will eventually cripple your hands. Calcium deposits are safe in that you won't die, but they are really bad for you.

Hi Jared,
Calcium build-up is definitely not good. As Dav pointed out arthritis is not fun and can cause debilitating pain and is permanent. My suggestion is to stop breaking boards. It is not worth it. On the other hand, if you or your teacher insists on your continuance of this practice then find some really good Dit Da Jow and apply it before and after your practice. If you already have substantial deposits then stop breaking at least for the time being while you find the Jow and use it for a while.

Breaking boards is great if you work at a lumber mill. However, in reality it means NOTHING in martial arts. Stop breaking boards, compete. See if breaking 5-10 boards will win you a fight.

No... It's bad! I'm a Muay Thai and a boxer. My knuckles look very normal but I still can give you some serious beat up that would leave a very lasting result.

Will it kill you, probably not. Arthritis (calcium buildup in joints) can be extremely painful for the rest of your life.
