Call the local schools and find out what their focus is. See if she can take a free class (most instructors want your money and will be happy to let you try the class).
Have your friend go and watch and then they should pick the one that is best for them.
Look for a kid friendly instructor.

Your basic, strip mall type karate school should be enough. I'm not thrilled with karate as being a very practical martial art. But, a good, kid friendly school will teach them respect for themselves and others, discipline and how to deal with others in a friendly way.
As they age I would enroll them in boxing classes, wrestling and martial arts that have been prooven effective like phillipino kali, ju-jutsu.
Anyway, go to all the clubs you can. Ask questions. Closely observe the relationship between instructors and students and just trust your instinct. Does this feel like the type of school I'd want my daughter/son involved in?

Karate would be best for young kids. They will learn the basis for self defense a gain more focus and self control which help them at school and at home. When she gets older she can decide if she wants to move on to a different level of the Martial Arts.

I think martial arts specific, you should look into TKD. I've done it for the past 14 years and most kids programs I've seen (including ours) is outstanding. They get to yell, run around kick targets (which makes noise) etc. For building power and co-ordination, I don't think that a good TKD program can be beat. Look for a teacher that is both playful and strict when necessary. If you go to a school and watch the other kids interact with the teacher, you'll know what I mean.

It would probably be best to find a place in your area that trains kids (someone who trains Adults would probably be able to give you an answer too) in Martial Arts and ask them... The person who teaches the classes would probably be the best person to answer this question.

Which style or art it is really doesn't matter at that age. You just want a place that is focused on teaching kids.

TKD or karate. You want her to start in a hard form. Her body is still developing. Work towards that and with that.
