I must admit, I laughed at this deal when it was first announced. I still see lots of posts deploring it. I must say that I was wrong. In hindsight this may go down as one of the best deals ever and maybe Garth Snow (I hate him) is a genius. I could see other teams follow this lead.
Let me explain why- Garth Snow as a goalie probably saw that this guy did indeed have what it takes so he gets that deal done. So, the reality is yes, for the first couple of years of this deal, he is overpaid at 4.5 million a year BUT IMO he is already a top 10 goaltender and in 3 -4 years will be a top 5 and maybe in 6 or 7 years a top 3 so let's assume that in 5 years (rising salaries/cap #'s) that a top 5 goalie is making 8-9 million (seems right) then Dipietro is getting half of that and still locked up for 10 years at that price. Snow also bought his UFA from him so in 5 years he can't just jump ship to the highest bidder. I can admit when I was wrong. You'll see what I mean in 10 years. Thoughts?
