i know the top teams in each division get seeded by percentage for spots 1,2 and 3. but they changed it this year because of what happened last year in the playoffs. (aka the mav/ spurs rule). so i just wondering what that rule is now, cause if you look at the standings its not the top teams in each division.

I'll tell you how the rule works for the division winners now

instead of getting a top 3 seed automatically it's top 4 seed and if the 2nd best team in a division has a better record than the rest of the division winners they get the 2nd seed.

See the Cavs in the East for this rule as they are behind the pistons but will get the 2 seed.

The other division winners are placed in the other 2 spots in the top 4 but if a division winner still has a worse record than a 5th seed the 5th seed will get homecourt advantage in the first round. Applies for all lower seeds if they have a better record.

Stern wants to reward division winners even though for awhile there it looked like an eastern division winner wouldn't normally have made the playoffs.

As for the other seeds the top 8 make it with ties being decided by head to head records, division, records, conference records, and records against top teams

Anyone with more than 2 wins goes to the playoffs. Their system sucks. I don't know why they even play a regular season , almost the whole league is in the playoffs. Why don't they just start with the playoffs in Sept. and get it off T.V. by Thanksgiving.

winning %, For the playoffs if you winn your division you get an automatic in. Then if you are tied for 8th seed whoever owns the tiebreaker between the teams get the spot
