I'm a devout atheist. I acknowledge this; I absolutely refuse to believe in God or any other holy entity. (I used to believe, but certain things in life made me lose faith... well, thats another story)
I strongly disagree with trying to insult people who have different opinions (everybody is entitled to their own beliefs). However, I love discussing it, and sharing viewpoints. I friendly debate, if you will ^^
So, my question is:
To. atheists: why do you reject god? (please don;t give a simplistic reply such as "because there is no god!")
To. religious people: how do you justify your beliefs from the arguments of atheists? or what makes you believe in God?

Please, lets refrain from completely disregarding others' opinions. If we MUST argue, why not do it in a friendly debate?

Creationists argue that the universe is too complex to exist without a desinger. Creationists have a huge problem believing that the universe can be complex without a designer, but they have absolutely no problem believing that God, who is way more complex than our universe, can exist without a designer.

I'm a little upset I haven't had any assigned to me.

Also, props to the category suggestion engine for knowing the right category for this question.

... supposedly "supernatural higher beings". Examples might include aliens, angels, etc?

I expect most answers will be no since most if not all examples would violate the empirical evidence requirement. However, there might be some who might dismiss the existence of an omni-X "God" but accept the "logical" possibility of an evolutionary process that might arrive at other races more sophisticated than our own.

Understand that in the above, by "angel" I don't necessarily mean the Judeochristian spiritual being but perhaps (for example) a benevolent advanced being that has found a way to transcend spacetime and who might be mistaken for angels in the Judeochristian theology.

Of course, the examples I gave are just that - examples. I'm more curious if your conclusion about the (non-)existence of a god is based on a logical process that might not preclude "lesser" beings or rather on an empirical process for which you see none and that therefore would presumably preclude these too.

I asked the question as an educated and free thinking young individual. The answers I recieved were from two extremes (with a few in the middle). Christians answering were obviously Christian and they were kind (in a way that they found someone else and could try to defend their faith). Non-Christians were very defensive. I wasn't atacking anyone. Yes I realize it sounded like I was calling every college nonchristian student ignorant and I appologize. I was just able to make first impressions of most the people at orientation (usually talking about partying) and it made me sad. I realize I come from more of a shelterd school but I did my share of partying. I was hoping that students going off to college would be more mature as a whole than what I experienced in my first few days. But what I wanted to ask and hopefully those who responded with personal remarks on the last post would answer. Is why did you take that so personally I wasn't saying anything about you?

In the religions of Christianity and Islam, it is predicted that Jesus of Nazareth would come back.
If he did come back who would he recognize as the people he had once lived with.
In my opinion, I believe that if indeed he came back, he would recognize the muslims/Jews who are living in the middle east, mainly because of the similarities of dress, language, and culture between modern day palestine/Isreal(any other dominantly muslim country)
But that is my opinion

Sacrifice him. In order for Jesus to qualify as a savior he must be forgotten. So-called Christians have not accepted that their fair-haired boy died. Even though he did not die as reported in your wannabe bible he still died. Sacrifice him. Forget him. That would be your sacrifice to equal his. Duh!

Christians are constantly finding flaws in science, scientific research and scientific theories. One Christian asked earlier what new groundbreaking ideas has Richard Dawkins had of his own...or even slightly original.

This made me wonder about religion, Christianity specifically.

Since I believe that religion squashes free thought and new ideas, please tell me who in the Christian world...whose career is in religion...has something to say that adds to what you already know about your religion? Where is the evolution of ideas in your religion?

In this category in particular I find that the Q&A is often either rhetorical or tongue in cheek - both of which are humorous (in different ways) but neither particularly insightful (or insight-seeking). Furthermore there are a number of people that seem to ask questions and pick the "best answer" to be the one that follows their own beliefs. Their choice, of course.

My questions:

1. Do you ever look at a person's choices of "best answers" to infer any innate biases before/after answering a question?

2. If so, how do you distinguish between "best answers" chosen by the Y!A community at large (i.e., votes) vs those chosen by the asker. (There's probably a really easy way right under my nose but I don't know it).

Severeal Atheists on Yahoo! Answers, I have noticed, spend much of their time answering questions asked by Believers. And what do most of these answers submitted by non-believers consist of? Insulting and/or words attempting to persuade us to stop believing. To me, it's utterly ridiculous that they'd even try such a thing. And the fact that they become so annoyed when people with religion try to force their beliefs on them; then they turn right around and basically do the same exact thing to us! Can we say "hypocrites" much?!

I would never spend an iota of my time approaching an Atheist or a person of a religion different than my own and telling them what they should believe in, so I'd greatly appreciate if people would stop doing that to me.

I am an agnostic (i.e. I don't know and don't think I can know whether God exists). Does this mean that if I die as an agnostic and it turns out that He does, I will not be forgiven for being agnostic?

I am a Mormon and I have nothing against it! Why do so many people say Scientology is a cult and is evil and all that stuff!?!?!? As a Mormon, who is constantly ridiculed about being in a "cult," I cannot stand for this! What did Scientologists ever do to you?!?!?!?!?

Why can't I interpret the Bible on my own, why the church says it's only and exclusively up to her to do so?

What makes us so different from them, do they feel they're the only ones worthy of saying what God likes and what dislikes?
