I asked the question as an educated and free thinking young individual. The answers I recieved were from two extremes (with a few in the middle). Christians answering were obviously Christian and they were kind (in a way that they found someone else and could try to defend their faith). Non-Christians were very defensive. I wasn't atacking anyone. Yes I realize it sounded like I was calling every college nonchristian student ignorant and I appologize. I was just able to make first impressions of most the people at orientation (usually talking about partying) and it made me sad. I realize I come from more of a shelterd school but I did my share of partying. I was hoping that students going off to college would be more mature as a whole than what I experienced in my first few days. But what I wanted to ask and hopefully those who responded with personal remarks on the last post would answer. Is why did you take that so personally I wasn't saying anything about you?

I will respond to your intial question reagrding college students and expand it slightly

Christianity and higher education do not mix well. This is primarily the result of so many contradictions bewteen what is known by the scientific community and what is held to be true by christians (or muslims, jews, etc). Christianity and christians make such wild claims, ie the earth is only 6,000, 8,000 or 10,000 years old and the like, that it is very hard for those that are living in an academic environment to believe that anyone could even consider such nonsense. (Of course this is only one such example)

Now I am sure that this reply you will find unsuitable, however consider this; the age of earth where science is considered is the product of nearly all of the physical sciences (geology, chemistry, astronomy, biology, etc) while they do not necessary reflect the same age (Astro and Bio deal with different portions of the physical world and thus their findings are going to be relative only to that portion of their study) they all agree the the earth is far older then, say, 10,000 years. In short, these sciences reach consesus; they are in agreement to one degree or another.

However, when you consider christianity and remove the bible as a source you have absolutly nothing to back up the claims. The bible is so full of contradiction that it is very hard to take it seriously;

EXO 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.

ROM 15:33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

and

MAT 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

LUK 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.

and

JOH 10:30 I and my Father are one.

JOH 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

and

"And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." (2 Kings 2:11)

"No man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven, ... the Son of Man." (John 3:13)

and here are more

So the basic idea is that those people who are of have committed themselves to tapping into the repositroy of all human knowledge find this kind of stuff to be absurd. And, finally, they grow weary of discussing topics regarding reality with those that turn a blind eye to that upon which reality is founded, ie, facts.

I am of the mind that a man of facts and a man of faith cannot converse on such topics because as soon as a fact is thrown into the mix that man of faith closes his mind in the fear that his everlasting soul may be in peril....the man of fact has no such concern and is thus open to a truth that is supported by facts and thus far more likely to be true.

Lastly, I would have you know that I am a believer in a god of sorts, just certainly not that small, pety, vengeful and unforgiving god of the christian bible. That does not mean that I respect anyone less for believing what they believe...your soul is your business, not mine.....and vise versa.

If you are expecting maturity, then you expect too much. Most first year college students are away from their parents influence for the first time in their lives... so it's party time!

One of your other questions on a different board here shows that you have indeed been very sheltered... you are in for a major shock, sorry to say. I seriously hope you can deal with it.

I never saw the point of drinking until you puke and hooking up with a complete stranger. That's what most college students call partying so you aren't missing that much. There are other ways to have fun. Most college students are questioning their own faith and exploring different options - and being highly opinionated along the way. Too bad you got caught in the crossfire.

as long as somebody has the appropriate to particular their ideals, anybody else has the appropriate to particular their ideals approximately those ideals. otherwise, the 1st guy or woman has larger freedom of speech. the problem with religions such is Christianity is they teach human beings to handle others in the main in accordance to their god's regulations, particularly than in accordance to their very own recommendations. the only circumstances whilst God's regulations are extra acceptable than a guy or woman's recommendations are whilst the guy is a psychopath/sociopath (wherein case they might reject faith interior the 1st place, or interpret it in a vogue that keeps them on top of issues) or is undeniable stupid (wherein case every physique else's recommendations will do). additionally, God's regulations are taken from the bible, that would supply conflicting messages approximately what's sturdy. One Christian kin member of mine had this sort of problem; she did no longer know whether she might particularly lie and enable me stay or tell the certainty and enable me die. If she wasn't Christian, the only explanation for her no longer understanding may well be actual insanity. I do get dissatisfied approximately different religions; their followers look the two to be much less vocal or to much less in lots of circumstances show their faith. Christians at the instant are not inherently undesirable human beings; they are in simple terms in threat of doing undesirable issues that they does no longer otherwise do.

People of religion come off as self righteous and arrogant, Their attitude is like they know something that the rest of us don't. They believe they are right and if only people would listen to them then those people would be saved. Most people don't subscribe to such beleifs. Other people may also practice another religion and don't want to hear from you. How would you like it if a Mormon, JW, Jew or Muslim started questioning you. I am sure you wouldn't be so accomodating. Nobody wants to hear it from a self righteous person. Leave people alone.

The United States has been tolerant of religion, particularly Christianity since its inception. The intolerance that has reared its ugly head recently goes against all American tradition. College campuses are probably the most anti-religious and anti-Christian places in this country. People are being forced to hide their beliefs to avoid being ostracized by "tolerant liberal" students and professors. Now that it's no longer acceptable to discriminate based on race, the Christian has become the target of the intolerant. You may need to practice your faith privately and only share it with people you've gotten to know well personally. A lot of the rabidly secular students will eventually make peace with God.

Well, thanks for the apology, but you are STILL accusing non-Christians of harboring HATRED.

First you accuse non-Christians of "violent" disagreement and "ignorance". (Did anyone physically assault you because you are Christian ? Did anyone threaten you with violence, or suggest that you should be on the recieving end of violence ? )

Now you are talking about HATRED ? Did anyone start screaming "I HATE you" or "I HATE Christians ?" Or did you just observe the presence of non-Christian at the college and assumed they hate Christians ? Or perhaps you saw them express an opinion they disagree with Christianity, or you interpret their partying as "anti-Christian".

It's a little difficult to understand what you are referring to , since you are rather vague on what these "violent" "anti-Chrisitan" students are doing.

Perhaps if you could give us a concrete example of the violent, anti-Christian , hatred you've observed, we could better answer your question.

When I went to college (that's been a few years back), I didn't see a lot of hatred toward Christianity. If you haven't encountered it, then how do you know it exists to begin with? I went back to school a few years ago, and I didn't notice any of it then, either.

You assume others are ignorant about you whereas the case is rather the opposite.

Maybe you should talk about something other than partying, my experience of University was talking Philosophy until 3 am. Find different friends
