Sorry if its offensive to anyone that I'm only asking for the opinions of Americans, but there is a good reason for it.

I'm writing a fictional piece about an atheist who moves into a highly religious part of America, but he doesn't know a lot about their religion.

To make it seem realistic, I'd really like to know what country Americans see as being the least religious and, therefore, most likely to be ignorant of it.

Thanks for your answer.

Do not take the word of our Lord or Jesus Christ literally?

Also ...Where does it say "Disregard the word of our Lord and of Jesus Christ from the Old Testament?

If this does not exist then are these just interpretations?

If Christians are so ignorant, and so afraid of education and all of the other christian bashing slurs that I see on here, why do people keep asking them questions.

Some of you clearly view Christians as idiots, so why are you seeking the counsel of an idiot, when you could quite easily educate yourself by opening the bible? Or is it maybe that these Christian bashers are the ones afraid of education. Afraid to read a book that has been around much, much longer than any of your theories?

Why do Christians believe their Sun-God Jesus is real when he is clearly based on these same old recycled myths?

"The christian religion is a parody on the worship of the sun, in which they put a man whom they call Christ, in the place of the sun, and pay him the same adoration which was originally paid to the sun." Thomas Paine, 1737-1809

I'm not saying 'everyone' does this... But it seems when in church and feeling really close to Jesus and God people get teary eyed. What emotion is this? I tried to answer this myself but I couldn't come up with just one emotion...

We all agree that not everything in the bible was meant to be taken literally, right? We don't believe God really intends us to kill misbehaving children, or that we should should stone unmarried women that aren't virgins. So my question to Christians is...how do you decide which parts of the bible to take literally? If you don't believe those parts of the bible, why would you choose to believe that God sends all unbelievers to hell, an equally hateful sentiment? Why do you choose to believe that gay people will be sent to hell, when their lifestyle does absolutely nothing to hurt you and research suggests that it is perfectly natural. And don't just say "Not all Christians believe that..." I'm aware of that. This questions is for those Christians that do. How do you decide which parts of the bible to believe?

Do you believe that Jonah was truly swallowed by a whale?

Do you believe he did not die and was not digested?

Do you believe that he was "spit" out of the mouth of the whale onto the beach many days later fully intact with no harm done to him?

This is the account as told in the Bible. Do you believe this to be true?

People said that anything that could hypothetically be unhealthful is sinful:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AilwGsDQztQpIGNueClc0NXd7BR.?qid=20070627120015AAoNlLl

So by that standard, wouldn't the greatest sin in the universe be a cigarette? In the top five would be fried foods with trans fats, right? Both of those are MUCH greater health risks than the sins listed in the Bible.
