In this culture dogs and cats are seen as pets. This idea goes back thousands of years. In medieval times dogs were of more value to people to hunt wild game or to be used as watchdogs for protection. Cats had the purpose of hunting and killing mice and other vermin around the dwelling. Rather than kill and eat the dogs, people figured out that it would be smarter to use the dog's keen sense of smell and hunting ability to hunt larger prey such as the wild boar. Rather than kill and eat the cats, people allowed them to hunt and kill the mice that threatened their winter grain supplies. Truthfully, if there had not been larger animals around to hunt the Europeans probably would have eaten the dogs and cats. However this was not the case, so it became tradition for Europeans and eventually Americans to keep cats and dogs as working animals and eat larger animals like pigs, deer, and cattle. Even though most modern domestic cats and dogs do not do much work to contribute to the household the traditional roles they held in the family still hold true today.

Because in Western Culture people don't eat dogs and cats. In parts of Asia they have a basic rule: If it tastes good, eat it. That means they will eat dogs and cats and whatever, as long as it is healthy and tastes good. An okay idea, I guess. In other areas of Asia (India for example) they won't eat any animals, at all, ever. It doesn't matter what kind of animal it is, they won't eat it. In other areas of Asia (Islamic and Jewish countries) they will eat beef, lamb and chicken, but no pig.

Eating one kind of food or nothing eating it, is 100% a cultural issue.

Pork is sacred to my Folk. :-)

Asians eat both dog and *rat,* and dogs in traditional Amerind cultures served a dual purpose: garbage disposal and emergency rations.

SF author Arthur C. Clarke reports having eaten cat in France . . . a South Dakotan friend of mine says that in a SHTF situation, he's eating his, because he knows full well it'd do the same to him! :-)

Also in France and other European countries they eat horse meat, and the strange thing is, the U.S. supplies them with American horse meat, but won't sell the horse meat for Americans, why can't I buy horse meat and try it to see what taste better, cow or horse?

I would guess that society is so rich nowadays (in general) that we don't think of having to kill anything we come across. We can afford to have a piece of meat sitting on our laps (aka cat) and not think about it as food. When someone mentions the possibility to us, it sounds gross.

That's my guess.
