In both cases, I would urge you to NOT engage in risky behavior and use protection (ropes or condoms, yes both of which *can* fail) -- so what's the difference?

I agree that it's a good point. I don't think "risky" sexual behavior is a sin, though.

I would argue that rock climbing isn't dangerous at all, at least not your run-of-the-mill rock climbing. If you're at a VS or X level that's another story, but if you're attempting one of those climbs you should be pretty advanced. I have no idea why I'm rambling on, I just love rock climbing and have never felt risky or unsafe while doing it!

Climbing is statistically a very safe sport. Over the past decade or so especially, gear has greatly improved, as has the knowledge base. Most climbers do not engage in risky behaviour. You should use a better example than climbing since your more likely to get hit by a car or something.

And to answer your question, there is no difference except the condom is much more likely to break than the rope. ya gotta take some risks if you're going to reach those special "peaks" if ya know what i mean!

P.S. man these christians piss me off! i should just not go to this section of answers, i think it's bad for my health.

Do you really have to ask that? If you're calling it a "sin" then I'm guessing you are asking from a religious stand point. I believe that being sexually "loose" or having sex with a lot of people is a discredit to your honor and purity. That's why it is a "sin". Rock climbing may be from the stand point that you are being careless with your body, which the Bible speaks out against (desecrating your body) as well. But adultery, as it were, is a sin. Why is one worse than the other from any other standpoint? I dunno. Who wants to be a slut? Being easy kind of makes you appear as if you have no respect for yourself. If anyone can have you, you must not be very valuable.

A good point, since risky behavior has the chance of destroying the greatest gift God gives, life. I think at times some groups and individuals tend to want to focus their notions of sin on one issue but not on another issue. Often people tend to want to say that whatever they do is okay, but whatever some other person does is not okay. You have a VERY good point.

Except that risky rock climbing may end your life immediately, whereas risky sex will take an around 20 years supposing you catch HIV.

Excellent point. I just think anything to do with pee pees and ca cas is going to be condemned.

Risk is a part of life.If you never cross the street, this eliminates any chance of you getting hit by a car.But what kind of life are you gonna have living on one block?Rock climbing is fun,and so is sex.So long as you are taking every precaution to make it as safe as you can,you can engage in either activity with relatively little to worry about.

In Buddhism anything to one extreme or another is likely to cause suffering at some point... moderation in everything, including sex and exercise is best.
