of Mormons tells about God appering to the people in North American after the Resurrection. Am I correct in thinking that this is a wacky religion. I mean, Joseph Smith is supposed to have found this book under a rock, and somehow, he was able to translate it into English.

They seem to hate American traditions like freedom of religion. Freedom of speech is likewise an American tradition, they seem to want to stifle this too. The theocratic Christians seem to feel that Christianity should be the number 1 religion in the US. And that everything else has to be subordinated to it.

Note: I am talking about the Fundamentalists, the one’s who want a theocracy here in the USA. If you are not a Fundie, I am not talking about you.

Would you want people to offer their prayers, and nothing more?

Would you rather they spend time with you and the loved one you are losing?

Or maybe a little of both?

Which would you find more meaningful?

This question is imposed primarily to atheists who do not believe in a sole deity responsible for creating the life we live today. Considering the whole "cause and effect" principle, a principle we have grown to fully accept, constant regression is evident. If variable B makes variable C, then what is it that makes variable B? Variable A. But what makes variable A?

Atheism/religion shouldn't come down to a nitpicking contest, nor should it focus on minute detail. The basics, the origins, is where the most appropriate question lies. To atheists, what is the sole cause of the universe? Do not answer "the big bang." I now the big bang theory, and personally believe in it. However, the big bang theory relies on the content in the universe to be executed. Where did the first matter/particles/energy come from? If not by the will of God, did these particles become something from the force of nothing?

There is not much difference, religiously, about Islam and Christianity. The Bible and Quran teach the basic principals, believe in the same God (but they call him Allah) and believe in the same prophets. Muslims dont go around blowing people up, extrimists do that. When Osama blew up the mountains in Afghanistan that had the Buddists carved into it, all the Muslim nations told him not to do that. I think people call Muslims terrorists because thats what the media wants you to think. And all this coming from a Christian.

I saw an essay on atheism.about.com today about the pleasures of being atheist rather than Christian, written by an ex-Christian atheist.

http://atheism.about.com/od/aboutatheism/a/PleasureAtheism.htm?nl=1

And though I'm Pagan, I am glad for many of the same reasons.

I saw another reason why I'm glad I left surfing around the religious area of the about.com website. Christian teens are being advised to be careful at the prom, so they don't compromise their faith. Even the "modesty" of their prom dresses needs to be addressed. After all, they need to "set a godly example" and be a "good witness" all the time, even on prom night!

http://christianteens.about.com/od/advice/a/PromChristianTe.htm

I'm very grateful I don't have to worry about being anyone's example or witness anymore. I only have to think whether I can live with myself. That's my pleasure.

So how about you?

I'm not sure you can get anything to pass in this era though to help this kind of research out though. The politicians don't want to anger the sky god loving voting block.

I ran into a childhood friend who felt the need to share her life story with me...divorce, meth, trying to pull herself together. the whole bit. then, out of the blue, she said "the most exciting thing that's happened to me in the last three years is that I've given my life over to the lord." as a non-believer...what do you say to that? "I'm so happy for you" is a lie, "that's exciting" is kinda stupid. all i could muster was "wow" deep down i feel sorry for her, and even sorrier that she's fallen into a trap, however on the other hand, I feel like, "whatever makes you happy" how would you respond?

Posted: Fri May 25, 2007 5:55 am Post subject: AN ATHEIST IN THE WOODS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AN ATHEIST IN THE WOODS

An atheist was walking through the woods.
"What majestic trees"!

"What powerful rivers"!
"What beautiful animals"!
He said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing
In on him.

He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer. He tripped & fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant the Atheist cried out, "Oh my God!"

Time Stopped.
The bear froze.
The forest was silent.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident." "Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer"?
The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask You to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps You could make the BEAR a Christian"?

"Very Well," said the voice.

The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke:

"Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen."

When I was confirmed as an Anglican a few years back, I remember being told before the ceremont that the Bishop, who lays his hands on your head as part of the ceremony, could trace back the same thing to the apostles. Ie, he received the holy spirit from someone who received the holy spirit from.... etc ... Saint Peter. Is this true?

Do Catholics/Orthodox/other churches have a similar belief? Is there a competition to find the 'true' hand-layees as their is for the descendants of Muhammed?
