I believe all sounds of music started out as a gift of God. Some were born with a special gift of producing music. But the devil knows this & usually attempts to steal this gifted child to go the devils direction & the devil has convinced many talented rock musicians to sing his destructive message. But, there are born again Christian groups who have turned this type of music to sing Gods redeeming message.

The whole trick is to discern the message of the song & to sense the tone of the music. Some can sound mocking & that would be rebellion also.

Jesus said that you know a tree by its fruit. Is the message about love, joy, peace, commitment, Holy Spirit, life, promises, honorable, good reports, etc... or is the message about hate, depression, fear, rejection, alcohol & drugs, destruction, mocking, accusing, death (suicide, murder), etc...

The actual chords aren't evil. Rock chords and key progressions are used in many styles of music. Many believe that music is actually amoral (neither moral nor immoral) but that it is the associations, lyrics, and subliminal messages that have more of a bearing on that discussion.

Many of the great hymns of history had their actual music start as popular tunes of the day before morphing into Christian music.

Every generation looks for their own sound, and their own music to express themselves. It's what you do with the music and how it's used that will be judged by history.

In a Christian perspective if you apply the words of Paul to the Phillipians...."Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there by any praise, think on these things."

After reading this we should probably not listen to Rock n Roll but also pretty much all other forms of secular music and some "so called" christian music. Turn off your TV. Disconnect your internet. Put down all non-christian books. Quit supporting sporting events. Shut down all public schools. Quit reading newspapers and magazines. The list goes on and on. Is this an extreme. Can you just ignore those words of Paul? Do you just say "well Paul doesn't mean we can't do such and such". Ah!!! much to think about ineed. Where do you draw the line?

Maybe the Ahmish have gotten it right.

Rock Music never was evil to begin with....

If you ask me, although some subject matter of SOME rock music may not be to God's liking, in general Rock artists more than artists of other genres stay true to themselves and make music that they want to make. Too many other genres have a ton of artists who "sell out" to what will make them money... nothing wrong with standing up for something you believe in rather than conforming...

I listen to rock music (Christian rock music) and I think it's the message that matters. Only people that prefer to label but never listen to this music can say that it's evil. Like ...any music (jazz,hip-hop, rap, etc) can be evil if the message is evil. You listen to a hip-hop song about drugs and sluts and pimps and say it's ok, but you don't touch rock cuz you're afraid you might end up cutting your veins. that's silly

Some of rock music is pretty raunchy... but rap has certainly put it into the back seat, hasn't it.

Music is a matter of sounds evolving emotion.... the lyrics added are what make it tasteful or not, but none of it has any special power making it a thing to be thought of as "evil." That's just religious nonsense employed to cause fear and division.

Some is some isn't, ya just have to sift through them. And for those who say it never was, I can honestly name a few groups back in the day that were definatly evil and promoting satan. Black Sabbath for one held satanic alter calls at some of their concerts, and Ozzy even has a tribute song to Alister Crowley, a founding memeber of the church of satan.

It never was.

sola fide = faith alone

not to be confused with...

faith alone + nice clothes + contemporary worship music that has terrible theology anyway, but is pleasing to what I think God would describe as spiritual sounding, nevermind I am a sinner who cannot grasp these things truly.
