We know that the Meercat and Hyena are related, despite looking different. A male house cat can breed with a female tiger.
The Ark only needed the base genetic forms of each "species", not the millions of different "breeds". Since they began from the point where Eden was, and it was less than 2000 years since the creation of animals, they would still be near by. Even Eden would have still been there.
After the Great Flood, they spread out, genetic material began to mutate, and new breeds began to form. How did animals get on islands? The same question can be asked about the Bikini Islands, which had everything destroyed by the Hydrogen Bomb Test, yet animals have returned without the help of men.
