Number one is to listen. People want someone who cares. Then you can pray with them.

Well as a Nurse. I have worked in the ER and Hospice. and I always supported them in what ever their beliefs were. whether I agreed or not. They need comfort, not stress. I'm a pagan so a little old would probably freak if they new. but I kept it to myself. What ever they believe it is true to them. I have Scouted for Priests, ministers, rosaries, st Christopher medals for patients. Before Surgery or when they were very ill, You can see that It gives them comfort. and that's the important thing
When I get into a conversation that tends to lead to religion. I say just enough to sound as though I agree. It helps to know a bit about other religions to. Hope that helps
PS-Nurses are not a place for the ultimate religious counseling. But at times we are the only ones available to the patients. And Giving them comfort is part of our job. and if that means saying a prayer with them then you do it. Religion is very important to some people. and When they are in a better mental state they heal better. and if this helps to bring them to peace why wouldn't you do it.

It is not a nurses place to tend to the spiritual needs of the patient! They are there to give the best medical care possible and should not get involved with the spiritual issues. That is what priests, pastors, ministers, etc. are for. Family will also provide the special spiritual needs of the patient.

I did not know that a nurse's job included preaching. If the nurse can notify the patient's religious "family" of the patient's desire to get spiritual help, that is enough, as if one is not familiar with other religions, one should leave that to others who are familiar.

State how you believe only if asked by the patient. Listen to his/her points of view and honor their wishes. Care for them as any other.

Someone once said, "the way to reach a man is through his
religion. Not our own."
Get educated.
You'd be surpirsed how alike our beliefs really are. Once one
gets past the story telling used in the past.
