Those who would try and scare you into line with their views are not preaching the Gospel of love and compassion. They clearly have another agenda, and love is not high on the list. As to their motives, they probably vary according to the church member or preacher.

Because the BIBLE says that the beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord. No one can come to Christ until they fear the possibility of Hell. Until you have at least the beginnings of wisdom, you will never find true wisdom which is in the safety of Jesus's arms.
It is quite the modern way to preach love and forgiveness which needs to be preached, but Jesus talked more of Hell than he did of heaven, if it wasn't important to preach hell Jesus wouldn't have. A famous sermon called "Sinners in the hands of an angry God" was delivered in a monotone voice from a man who simply compared man dangling on a thread, barely suspended above Hell by Gods love. It saved hundreds and started a revival in America that has since been seen. God's love and Hell, quite a sermon.

The preachers that use the "Hellfire" scare tactic usually don't have an accurate knowledge of the Scriptures. The true meaning of "Hell" confused by failure of translators to distinguish between the original language words for She'ol in Hebrew and Ha'des in Greek. She'ol, Ha'des and Hell actually means the same thing, the Grave. Now since the dead are in the grave, what is the condition of the dead? Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10 reads (5) "For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are concscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. (6) Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun. (10) All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in She'ol the place to which you are going. Since the dead are conscious of nothing, then they can't be tormented in a fiery hell because they obviously feel no pain. When righteous and wicked mankind dies, they go to hell or the common grave. At Psalms 9:17 "Wicked people will turn back to She'ol, Even all the nations forgetting God. Also, at Job 14:13, "O that in She'ol you would conceal me, That you would keep me secret until your anger turns back, That you would set a time limit for me and remember me." Do you think that Job went to a fiery place of torment? For God himself said that Job was "a man blameless and upright, fearing God and turning aside from bad."-Job 1:8. When the greatest man that ever lived,Jesus, had died, he was in Ha'des or Hell. The scripture at Acts 2:31 reads "He saw beforehand and spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he forsaken in Ha'des nor did his flesh see corruption." Now, do you think that Jesus went to a place of fiery torment, a hellfire? When you preach about Gods love, it is not without telling you about the opposite. The understanding of Gods existence is the acceptance that in His laws, there is Blessing and there is a curse. A blessing will be yours if you follow His commands and a curse if you turn away from Him and disobey His laws. Hell fire and Brimstones are not suppose to be the center of your faith. Fear of God is not to be misconstrued as living your life in fear doing things under strict control and scrutiny. Those who preach about those deadly scenes you mentioned have little understanding of God's law but an effective way to live in guilt and mind control over you. In other words they imprison you to ignorance of the truth. Many church grew rich through subjecting their congregation to that fear. Even by the way they teach us how to Love, they always would insert that warning of that hell fire if we don't give love threby our love is not true most of the time.

Some preachers are not aware of the truth. Not every one who preaches is a Christian. Hells fire and brimstone worked well in the beginning of the nineteen and twentieth centuries. Today people seek the truth and when confronted with Hells fire and brimstone they are hesitant to respond.
The truth of why Jesus came is in John 3: 1-20. The book of Revelation does mention Hell and is very specific about it. Sometimes you hear a Christian asking smoking (Hell) or non-smoking (Heaven).

They are preaching to the choir. Very few people convert because of a fire and brimstone message, but those who already believe, especially the older generation, really love hearing about outsiders roasting in hell.

A long winded reply from a laymans soap box. FEAR!, grab you by the throat FEAR. Plain and simple. "THINK OF WHAT THE DEVIL WILL DO TO YOU WHEN HE GETS WIND OF WHAT YOU DUN' BOY!!!!!!..................Damed to HELL." Huh!, sounds kinda like GW Bush huh? "Just think of what you stand to loose if you let these terrorists win......Our way of life !!!!, but I will stop them" says George, but first you must give up some liberties for US to achieve this and maybe a few more if it gets any worse. Govt around the world have used fear to keep the masses on side, A Fear of everything that "Jest' don't look ryte' , I thank ets gunna tek away my wey off liaff, imah jest gunn haf ta kill et. Whew! Because, that way, they can scare many people into believing everything they say. And no one likes the idea of having to endure fire and torture -- not for a year, not for a million years, but FOREVER. So they convert to Christianity "just in case." I agree, it's sad.

Actually they are not trying to scare anyone, it's truth, pure and simple. Maybe your not sticking around one church enough to allow them to get to other messages and preachings of any other thing.
