There seem to be a lot of opinions about how the term originated.

When I was in school I learned it came from the time of the Plague in England as sneezing was one of the first symptoms. So they were basically saying "I hope you don't die"

Since moving to America I have heard a whole load of other reasons for it relating to spirits and demons.

I just checked wikipedia and they seem to agree with me

I am amazed by this. But I heard it from a god freak..

Apparently, god created all this so you can serve him and his wishes.

Do you really velieve that an all seeing and al knowing thing requires this of you? He already knows what your going to do anyway. Seems quite pointless.

And just how could you possibly serve him???

Serve him with what? What doesnt he have already? what could he possibly be lacking.

Why do so many self-proclaimed atheists insist on trying to humiliate Christians?
I find it so enlightening to find so many "open-minded" or "atheist" people on Answers trying to degrade the belief of millions of people. Why are atheists so consumed by what Christians do and say? If you are what you say, then you should see us as a bunch of brainwashed morons and mostly ignore us. But you don't. You insist on smearing us, spitefully and passionately. As atheists shouldn't you be dispassionate and analytical? My thought is that those of you who call yourselves atheist are not at all. It's NOT that you don't BELIEVE in God. You HATE God (even though you know He exists), the Bible, and all of His people. Otherwise, why protest so passionately?

can all theist pray to god for terrorist so that, they may understand that there nothing better in life than love for others, they give up path of armed struggle to non violent mode of protests, similar to that Gandhi experimented in india and south africa.

1) there is only one god so there is no meaning in saying which religion is better, the only issue is to understand god better, lead a better life before god and men.

2) Time has proved different ethnicities, cultures, politics,religions, castes and sects can co-exist in a country and can be prosperous than any other singular society.

3) It is time for all groups to come together leave violent modes of protest including terrorism, come to an understanding in all possible areas that is having unresolved issues.

do you think there is hope for non violence in this world? if you do, please pray, ask your friends and family to pray with all their heart, so that people will leave violence and increase in love for fellow human beings

For those that like to point out the shortcomings in others, (specifically me) allow me to help you with your endeavour. I am slightly overweight, quick to temper, overly pensive, condecending, thick headed, arrogant, and self serving. Although I strive to change these things, it would seem that isn't good enough for some, allow me to say that I try not to embody these qualities on here. I also have a real interest in spiritualism, and wonder why it is that people are so nasty towards each other, as I think that if I can answer that question, maybe I can change too. Would anyone like to add to the list for me?

I'm an agnostic and I respect people from all types of backgrounds, why every time I hang out and someone brings up religion do christians not respect the opinions of others and force their opinions to the forefront? If I ask them to stop they get even more passionate, it's very disrespectful to other don't you think? I'm sure someone will tell me to believe in Jesus or I'm going to hell for this one.

i used to be a christian but i stopped when i was 15. every church i went to the people there acted as though i was tresspassing on private property or that i was in the wrong place. i got a few smiles but i could tell they were forced. after much deliberation i have decided to be of no regilion but to focus my energies in the wiccan and pagan religions at the same time. they are fascinating and i have discovered more about myself while studying these 2 religions for the past few years then i had in 15 years of christianity. after all my studying i have one question.

i believe there is more than one god. i don't worship them all i just believe they exist. many religions admit there are many gods. how do christians know there is only one? you are taught there is only one but what if that one is really one of many? how do you really know for sure?

first i have to say that quran was revealed to prophet mohammad who couldn`t read or write 1400 years a go in arabia. the spritual and moral content and the devine beauties of the quran is so attractive that most people become muslims because of

The word "land" appears 13 times in the Qur'an and the word "sea" 32 times, giving a total of 45 references. The number of total references to land and sea, 45, divided by the number of references to the sea in the Qur'an, 32, is 71.111111111111%. Extraordinarily, these figures represent the exact proportions of land and sea on the Earth today

The statement of "seven heavens" is repeated seven times. "The creation of the heavens (khalq as-samawat)" is also repeated seven times.

"Day (yawm)" is repeated 365 times in singular form, while its plural and dual forms "days (ayyam and yawmayn)" together are repeated 30 times. The number of repetitions of the word "month" (shahar) is 12.
