Would anyone be interested? I just want a chance to practice my German, with someone who knows the language as a native speaker. I would perhaps like to emigrate to Germany later in life, so it would be nice to get a good feel for the language...thanks for any help anyone can offer.

I've applied for the Québec Skilled Worker Visa, intend to live in Québec City, and am learning French in the interim. Everything I have access to (I'm in the US) teaches the European dialect. I spoke with many people while I was in Québec City last month and have heard every opinion from there not being much of a difference (from a friend living there that is originally from Paris!?) to some saying that they practically felt like they were learning a new language. I do not want to spin my wheels or give myself an accent that will cause problems in the future, ie getting a job or being socially accepted (and I would like to integrate fully into the culture as much as possible). Is it best that I just learn French in Canada when I get there or can I benefit from school French while I'm waiting or will it ruin me?

Shouldn't it be a flat standard for everyone? And no one should use it? The reasons behind it don't make any sense...

What would be the most appropriate translation to Latin for the phrase “Word to mother” with the context of ‘word’ referring to the written word, ‘to’ referring to a gift and ‘mother’ as in the maternal mater context.

From my very limited knowledge of school boy Latin I think it would be “VOX AD MATER” but clarification and explanations would be good as my pocket book of Latin has the following translations.

Word
vox, voice, verbum, vox vocis, fides, famen, dictum

to
ut, tenus, procul, cupio, gratia, ad

mother
matris, mater matris, genetrix

Hello/Bonjour

Could someone please translate the following:

On 26th of august he was notified that he was eligible to the second set of tests. However Pasteur was not happy. He was ranked 15th out of a group of 22 candidates. He decided not to take the second set of tests and to re apply the next year.

Pasteur then started doing his prepatory, in besancon. On the eve of his departure, he executed one last pastel, a portrait of his father, before he left his family, his eyes returned to the future. At almost twenty, Pasteur was no longer the fearful child who had been undone by leaving his family and his home.

Life was harsh for Pasteur but he was determined. During his time Pasteur took up singing lessons. He wanted to gain more self confidence. However Pasteur then had to give up the lessons because he could no longer afford them.

Thank you in advance.

I've had a few complications with accents while I speak languages.

I speak Chinese, English, and Japanese.

I realize that I have an accent in all three, so I have to ask... is it better to know all three languages but speak with an accent? Or is it better to just stick with one language, be perfect in that and forget the others?

I get self conscious when my American friends point out my grammatical/pronunciation errors or when my Chinese friends tell me not to speak because of my accent. Because of the above incidents, I've been trying to get rid of my accent in Japanese also.

What are your opinions?

"..Homeowners aged 40 to 50 are more likely to purchase ice cream and are more likely to purchase it in larger amounts than are members of any other demographic group. The popular belief that teenagers eat more ice cream than adults must, therefore, be false...."

what it means by "than are members of any other demographic group" ? what is a demographic group ?

"..therefore, be false" ...what is false ?

can anybody simplify these statements ?
