I will make the whole thing simpler.

People who own houses with an age of 40 - 50 more commonly buy ice cream and more commonly buy large amounts of ice cream than other aged people. Therefore the popular belief that teenagers eat more ice creams than adults is not true.

demographic group = age group

false = not true / wrong / incorrect / untrue / inexact

You've got a couple of things going on here- the first is a complicated elision- where you don't say something that's understood. I'll put the elided parts inside {brackets} for you. There is a grammatical comparison in the semantic utterance-something is more likely than something else. Grammatically, there is a sentence as the first element, and only a noun phrase as the second element.

"..Homeowners aged 40 to 50 are more likely to purchase ice cream and are more likely to purchase it in larger amounts than are members of any other demographic group {likely to purchase ice cream}. The popular belief that teenagers eat more ice cream than adults must, therefore, be false...."

what it means by "than are members of any other demographic group" ? what is a demographic group ?

"Demographic" means the population is grouped by demographics- characteristics commonly used to make statistical statements about a population age, sex, ethnicity, etc. This demographic grouping is related to age.

"..therefore, be false" ...what is false ? *** "The popular belief that teenagers eat more ice cream (than 40 to 50 year old homeowners). "

I have one logical problem here- the stated fact that one group (40 to 50) buys more ice cream implies that they eat more ice cream. However, the paragraph does not show the relationship between *buying* and *eating* ice cream. That the older group buys larger amounts also seems to indicate that they have help (perhaps from teenagers?) in eating the ice cream.

The demographic group is the adults that are aged 40-50.
The "False" is stating that teenagers in fact do not eat more ice cream that those that are in a age group of 40-50.

The demographic group would be "homeowners ages 40-50" and "teenagers".

However that couldn't be proven..because purchasing and eating are two different things...the teenagers could be living with the middle aged homeowners.
