I live in California. When I type in the word favorite...spell check corrects me and gives me ' correct ' spelling of ' favourite ' with a ' u ' . When I type in the word color . . . I am directed to ' correct ' spelling of colour with a ' u ' .

How does spell check show when you type in these words ? And, please let me know where you live as I'm wondering if this is a British based site as the British (being the original spelling of English language) spell words with the letter ' u ' .

English is not my first languge and i learnt to speak it in five years. however, i always strugle in my pronunciation that is the way i speak to people they dont get me often, so its anoying repeting the messege again and again to clarifay my self. can any one help me and if any one has the same expriance lets share! tanks.

I live in California. I just replied to another question and within my answer I used the word ' favorite '. When I clicked on spell check the word ' favorite ' was brought attention to and was given the spelling of ' favourite ' (with a ' u ' ) as a correction spelling choice. The choice of my own spelling was not in the list.

Is Yahoo Answers primarily a British based or originated site ? The British spelling of words uses the letter ' u ' more than American spelling.

And...yes, I do know that America is branched out from England and theirs is / was the original spelling of the english language and uses the letter ' u ' in words. Example...The English use spelling of ' colour ' with a ' u '. . . In the U.S.A. we spell that same word as ' color '. I'm really mostly asking here if Yahoo Answers is a British based / originated site.

What i wish to myself.

I wish that I will have a happy and peaceful life, and also that I will have plenty of money. I also like to become a famous businessman. So big that I will be shown in the news. I also like to have all kinds of cars. But for now I want to wish myself a happy and enjoyable life with good grades. That is all that i wish myself at this moment!

yesterday i went to pizza hut in annanagar.as u all know these kinda places.ppl of tamil nadu have changed a big deal.when i started takin in tamil my mom nudged me and asked me to tak in english.i can tak fluently in english but i dint know why my mom asked me to do tat!!is spekin in tamil a wrong thing to do?when i went to dav school to write entrance exam today one girl was saying to the other-"y the hell do u reoly in talmil.will u plz converse in english".nd this happened outside the school campus!!wat does this all mean?are we the ppl of t.n changin.when hindi was dclared as the national language the was protests all over t.n.and soo many fought against it.we tamil ppl have a certain kinda respect our language anf take pride in spekin in tamil.our mothertounge our llife line???generally tamil ppl amd malayalis and bengalis are patriotic not only to our country but also their mother tounge(s).are we tamil ppl of today like this?

I always read this term here in the questions regarding different people who were persecuted and killed by the Nazis. "Gypsy" is the dictionary translation of the German term "Zigeuner" (I'm German) which is derogatory similarly like "*****", while the correct term in German now is "Sinti and Roma" (I mean some of them are Sinti and others are Roma), which are the words they use for themselves. I hesitate to use the word "Gypsy" because it sounds racist to me, but my question now is if it sounds derogatory for native English speakers and also if anyone understands what I mean if I write "Sinti and Roma". I use to answer these questions and I am irritated about the usage of words now.

If you have time I'd like to answer you an additional question: What are your associations with the word "Gypsy"? What comes to your mind? Isn't the word loaded with prejudice?

I am studying portuguese in a 1st yr. level class at a univ. I went to Brazil nearly 30 years ago as an exchange student, so my spoken port. is not too bad, especially once i've been speaking it for awhile - once i warm up. I am taking the class because i want to learn the proper grammar. Most people were nice, but some made fun of me, as some of the grammar in my question wasn't quite correct. It was a combo of a little carelessness, tiredness and forgetfulness and a little bit of not knowing verb tenses or correct words. Language changes over time with the intro of pop culture and slang, so i'm not really up-to-date. But i think it was a good effort on my part and i know it wasn't all wrong.

My question is, how would you react to someone who was from another country, trying to learn english and asked a grammatical question. Would you be nasty with snide remarks, or would you be helpful? What kind of person are you?
