I live in California. When I type in the word favorite...spell check corrects me and gives me ' correct ' spelling of ' favourite ' with a ' u ' . When I type in the word color . . . I am directed to ' correct ' spelling of colour with a ' u ' .
How does spell check show when you type in these words ? And, please let me know where you live as I'm wondering if this is a British based site as the British (being the original spelling of English language) spell words with the letter ' u ' .

" JJ " . . . Thanks for information and for the apology for your comment ' dumbing down the English language for Americans. Behave yourself...I stated that I am a Californian...be nice. Sorry to hear of you having to spend a relaxing Sunday repairing fence blown down by a storm. It's Super Bowl Sunday here in the states . . . I'm going to a movie and out shopping with a friend. Now, go fix your fence...and hope your day is less ' grumpy '. ~ Smiles ~

I'd imagine you're running Answers UK. All of my American varient words are being recognised as correct. I'm actually living in Ireland, but I made a point to set Answers US as my preference, no particular reason.

PERFECT spellings: colour, labour, favourite. Don't worry about it - spread the word and get the Americans spelling English correctly. After all, the language is called "English", not "American"...
It's part of the way the US government dumbs down things for its citizens so they don't have to think for themselves: "Let's simplify the spelling so everyone can manage it!"
Sorry, I'm feeling grumpy today because I've been replacing six fence panels blown down in the recent storms across England. If I'd been in the US (not in the south) this would have been headline news with lots of TV coverage, but in England, we just get on with the job, like spelling correctly.

Check the language and encoding settings on your computer. It seems that you may have them set for English- UK. The "u" is correct spelling for UK English.
And, BTW, don't pay attention to the grumpy Brit. Sounds like he has a personal vendetta against Americans in general. It is not uncommon for languages to have mulitple dialects based on location. The difference in spelling is not a result of "dumbing down" the languag. It is due to a difference in dialect.

Favourite and colour are British based, used here in Canada. The US spelling drops the u. Other similar words would be humour, odour etc.

The inclusion of the u is proper English and the correct way to spell things.

Yes it is the correct spelling in England. You are possibly on British questions only ,it comes up as minus the u on mine but I always correct it ,as I am Britsh through and through.
