It helps if you know both languages. Then you just decide how best to express in English what the Italian text is trying to get across. You need a good background in general culture and literature in both languages.
I'm a professional translator; that's how I do it.

Learn Italian. Just do a favor to yourself and DON'T use those awful free translation websites. the translation they do is just pathetic and if you need to use it in public, it'll make you look ridiculous.
