hi ash
thre are some people who think that they are cutlreless people if they talk in thier regional langauge. its common in modern people. but i think tamilians are patriotic to their own language. infact i am against their hate to other languages. they are proud of being tamilains and most of them speak tamil only. yesterday i had a program in tamil of rotract club. usually thre we use english since it can be understood by everyone. but they used only tamil only and we had to sit there like idots. i am not blaming you. instead giving an example for their love fo tamil language. your parents may be in other category who thinks speaking tamil is not cultured. but if you like to speak you speak in tamil. if you dont know local language how can you interact with local people. if you dont hav conncection with local people, you wil be isolated.
so i appreaciate for you love for language.
if the other person is not from tamil nadue then speak in english otherwise u english tamil only. you can talk in english with ur parents so that you can make them happy toooooooo.

and wen u seeeeeee your frends who know tamil but speaks only english you just speak in tamil with them even if they tease you

take care
good day
good wishes

frenly lins

This is happening with a small cross section of people only, who are having access and opportunityfor studying in english medium schools.
Only about 10-15 % of people in Tamil nadu may be having the advantage of knowing english along with mother tongue Tamil and they desire to talk in english to sharpen their english skill further. Also, they feel their privacy can be protected if they converse in english.
Now,Government is slowly but steadily introducing tamil as a medium of instruction in schools and tamil will find acceptance among people soon as a spoken language.
Globally english is more popular in getting employment in abroad and hence people love english more than trheir mother tongue.

Just exhibitionism in respect of some people.Such people perhaps think that it raises their status to a higher level in front of others.
Another reason is to improve their English fluency.
The pride of speaking in their mother tongue is absent in them.
I have also noticed that young parents encourage their kids to call them Mummy, daddy even while talking in Tamil. This must be stopped.
Knowledge of English is definitely a boon. But it should not be at the cost of mother tongue.

Visiting pizza hut is a status symbol and it shows mostly they are NRIs. Most of the middle class families want their children to go US and they want them speak english fluently.

People are changing, for the good .Learning hindi and english is not wrong but neglecting one's mother tongue is wrong, however people should realise the value of their mother tongue.
