If someone begins to talk with a sound like"Gh-rrr-", how is it like?

Could you replace a word for it?
In the novel "Vernon God Little", there is a character, that speaks like this. Everytime she wants to speak, says: "Gh-rrr.'. I don't know how to translate it. please help me, by suggesting a word, or phrase. Thank you.
