1- What are they?
2- When did you feel realy lucky you know these languages?

I myself know 4 languages (German, English, French & Arabic).
I work in foreign purchases and i feel very lucky to know all these languages. I think talking to a person with his/her language makes things very much easier.

What about you?

is it better to know a popular foreign language such as spanish, where it is used in many different countries, or a specialized specific language such as thai, vietnemese, japanese, that are only used in one country? i am interested in international trade and i wanted to know so i could work with the most amount of oppurtunities that each language could provide.

Yan.zi is a Chinese pop artist and I LOVE her music (my grandfather went to China a few years back and brought home her CD, which I ripped onto my Media player). Unfortunately, I have no idea what the lyrics are or what they are translated as. I was wondering if anyone knows the English translation of the lyrics on her CD Leave (mostly songs 1 and 2). Thanks!

Hi guys!

I posted a question about this script i found (long story). Its written in Hebrew and im dying to know what it says. Since im Muslim, people think im trying to take the P*** or something. Its sad how politics divide communities.

BUT ANYWAY. i need help in translating it. Anyone like to help whos fluent in reading it? Im not even sure if its Hebrew, or if there are many versions of Hebrew?

I dunno whats a safe way of communicating through this. If i leave my msn Id, i might get hate mail from people lol. But thats just a bad assumption. Anyway, also tell me if your interested to help, how you want to communicate. cos sometimes it doesnt let you.

The scripture is said to be 5,000 years old. But since i posted my last question about it, people told me the religion itself isnt that old. So it must be 2,000 years old or something.
But do guide me here guys, rather than discouraging. Thanks!

I am asking because Maurice Ravel, composer of Bolero, was a member of a group of musicians and artists at the turn of the 19th Century who called themselves "apaches". Is this just a reference to Native Americans, or is there another meaning? Is the word even derived from the Indian reference or is it an entirely separate word? And is it pronounced with the e at the end spoken or silent ("Ah- pash" versus "A Pat- Cheee")?

I'm interested in languages and want to go into linguistics however I really don't want to live a...modest lifestyle. I've heard that you can be a lecturer or a UN translator or a million other things in international relations. Also, what colleges or university would be best for majoring in linguistics?

Trying this in another forum:

In all seriousness, this issue came up tonight. My sister was complaining that she couldn't understand why African-Americans get so distraught over being called (the N-word). She really couldn't understand why - she had apparently looked it up & found that it meant "tree stump." No joke. Obviously she was looking at the wrong word. But she's been all this time thinking that's what it meant.

Well, just to prove my point that her definition was wrong, and that it meant "ignorant" or "stupid," I decided to search the various online dictionaries.

Suprise! None of them supported my definition! I know that Webster's defined it that way when I was in high school - which is why I always hated it as a racial connotation.

My problem is this: when did the definition change from "ignorant/stupid/unintelligent... to "a black person/a member of any dark-skinned race/a member of a socially disadvantaged class"??

What in the world did I miss? And WHEN??

I was in line at a Rite Aid last week in LA. The cashier spoke Spanish to everyone in front of me, but when I (blond, non-hispanic) politely started speaking Spanish to her, she responded in English. I am fluent in Spanish and I love speaking it. Why does this happen?

The Basques live in northern Spain. The similarity is so to be so striking that it can not be coincidence. The Ainu race was thought to be caucasian but is now assimilated with the mongoloid Japanese.
