Lord,
We humbly ask Thy blessing on the turkey and the dressing
on the yams and cranberry jelly,
and the pickles from the deli.
Bless the apple pie and tea
bless each and every calorie.
Let us enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.
Tomorrow we can all get thinner.
For all thy help along the way
we're thankful this Thanksgiving day.
we are thankful too, for all our dear ones,
for all the far way and near ones.
Although we may be far apart,
we are together in my heart.
keep us in thy loving care,
thisis my thanksgiving prayer.

p.S. Anyone who wishes may help with the dishes.

In the past we have spent Thanksgiving with my Sister In Law, her hubby, their 2 kids and my mother and father in law. My inlaws moved and my SIL and her family will be visiting them this year. My son said that the day will really be boring so I thought I'd try to come up with some different things to do.... All ideas are welcome. Thank you!

I need some recipes besides the traditional Thanksgiving meal dishes. I want my own food traditions, not always the norm ones. (Of course I still want turkey :) )

For example: my mother made a brocoli, cheese, and rice dish and we have it every year.
Now I live on my own and I want my own traditions. Help please?

Is it okay to ask my family to each bring a dish? I have NEVER done this before, so I want the food to be good, and I know everyone has a great dish. If I am offering to have it, does that mean I gotta do ALL the work? Its just family, no friends or anything. And we are a pretty laid back crowd

A friend of mine hosted a get-together yesterday, but forgot it was Canadian Thanksgiving. We still had a decent turn-out because half the guests did dinner on Sunday and the other half were Jewish and didn't celebrate. It never occured to me that Thanksgiving was religious (I think Halloween is MORE religious than Thanksgiving.) It doesn't make sense to say that it is supposed to be a multi-generational Canadian thing (i.e. British or French stock) because Chinese restaurants in the Toronto area (and I suppose Vancouver area too) will make turkey to order, complete with Chinese stuffing (sticky rice w/ mushrooms) Do some believe it is religious, even though it isn't?

We're having roast stuffed turkey, with potatoes & squash.
Family are gathering on Sunday instead of the holiday Monday.

Last year my family and my wife's family had Thanksgiving at almost the exact same time. She decided she didn't want to go to her family's gathering because she doesn't like to be hurried and stressed out by trying to get to both. I told her we should go, but end the end we didn't go to her side's dinner. Do I have to give up my family's thanksgiving dinner this year?

..for someone who does not have any family in Canada? Thanksgiving being a family celebration, getting yourself invited to dinner at a friends place isin't exactly appealing either :-)
