I would have to say dinner should be served in the evening because the food, especially the turkey, is still being prepared and cooked throughout the day and it would all be ready to eat later in the day.

I think most families serve mid to late afternoon. I would say 3-4pm, with dessert being served 6-7pm. But if I had to choose between your two choices, it would be 2-3pm.
There are many variables here though. Do people travel from out of town? Do they attend church in the morning (delaying the start of cooking time)? Are small children involved?
When I was married we always went to my in laws for an early dinner, 12-ish, we ate a light mean there. Then to my families for dinner at about 4. It's whatever works for the family.

Technically it is called Thanksgiving DINNER but I have always liked to have it in the middle of the afternoon. I would say 2-3, that way you can enjoy a long day filled with family and friends even until the evening :-)
I would also like to add that you two should agree on a time that you both like, possibly somewhere in the middle and you can make that your family tradition, if you dont have one already that is :-)

Food on Thanksgiving is supposed to be served as a DINNER not lunch and not a late dinner. That being said, dinner should be served anytime between 3 and 5pm. I think that 6pm is too late because most people make plans after Thanksgiving dinner. We usually have ours about 4pm.

I have seen it done both ways--I have no idea what the original "right" way is, it depends on the region of the country you live in and what your family traditions are, as well as everyone's schedules.
If your girlfriend's family and your family don't live too far away, and they do them at opposite times, you could actually make an appearance at both get-togethers. Or, you could cook opposite another close-by gathering and invite folks from there to join you. This actually helps resolve conflicts between extended families (which somehow seems to matter more once grandkids arrive.)
Of course, if everyone lives far away, this won't work--you will still have to do the switch out years routine, or one house for Thanksgiving the other for Christmas.
I think it may depend on whether the men in the family are hunters or football fans. Guys who want to have time to get to or from the deer stand might favor the mid-day celebration so as not to interfere with early morning and late evening hunt time. Guys who don't want to miss the Thanksgiving football games will want to be finished with an early dinner in time to get in front of the TV, or wait until the game is over.

If we're having a simple (read: immediate family only) Thanksgiving, it's normally served somewhere around 5:00ish.
When we go to other family members' homes for the "big family dinner" thing, it's usually about 3:00.

It's a late lunch... Turkey goes in the oven at around 9 or 10 and it takes abt 4 hours to cook, then you've got other stuffs that need to get heated, re-heated and outright cooked. This means that you are at the table by 3 or 4.... Everyone out the house by 9pm! Unless you are ready for leftovers!!!

We used to eat early in the afternoon and I hated it. You dont wanna eat breakfast if Turkey dinner is early and it makes you tired the rest of the day. I think it is better to eat around 5 o'clock that way you dont have to start cooking really early in the morning, you can have a nice breakfast and watch football and the parade!

what a crazy thing to disagree on. Whenever you want it,is when to have it. Yrs ago we did it later in the afternoon so the kids could go to the football games, then when that ended we had dinner about 1pm. then when the kids had kids and had a hard time getting out that early,we went to 5pm,so also babies could get home, bathed and put to bed at a reasonable hr.
