It originated with President Lincoln to thank God for His bounty and protection. Since our country was founded and built by Christians, It's both a Christian and an American holiday.

Thanksgiving is an American holiday, not a Christian holiday. As you know, it's based on the peace between the pilgrims and the indigenous natives in the area were the pilgrims began colonization. If it was'nt for the natives, the pilgrims would have been wiped out by the winter. Because the pilgrims were a Christian based people, they supposedly prayed to God for thanks. Hence the tradition kept on going up to this day.
There's really no reason why this should be a holiday, but since most of America observes this and need the time off to cook up the meals and stuff their faces and watch football, the federal govt. made it a holiday. As for the native peoples, do you really think they like this holiday, especially after the genocide treatment they received afterward?

What part of the world do you live in that people get offended by the phrase "Happy Thanksgiving" ?

To my knowledge Thanksgiving is an AMERICAN holiday, but I have heard a very few Christians try to claim it as a Christian holiday.

No, it's the celebration of the native americans and the settlers from overseas coming together and enjoying their harvest. Nothing religious about it. The people may be offended because they're native american? Or they're just ignorant and don't know what Thanksgiving really is.

Thanksgiving commemorates the first colonists making it through the first winter. Native Americans took part in the first Thanksgiving and they weren't Christians.

(I'd wait until the end of Nov before wishing anyone Happy Thanksgiving, tho.)

thanksgiving is a country holiday, not celebrated by any particular sect. canada has a thanksgiving too, but it's on a different day than ours.

and if you're a true Christian, you should give thanks every day, not just the last thursday in november.

It's a National holiday, in the US at least. If they get offended, pray for them. They must really have a sh*tty life.
