In the past we have spent Thanksgiving with my Sister In Law, her hubby, their 2 kids and my mother and father in law. My inlaws moved and my SIL and her family will be visiting them this year. My son said that the day will really be boring so I thought I'd try to come up with some different things to do.... All ideas are welcome. Thank you!

to my way of thinking Thanksgiving should always be the same no matter whether their are 4 people or 40. Make the turkey and all the fixins, you are making memories. Many yrs from now, the kids will remember your Thanksgiving, and your signature dishes. I'm in my mid sixties and I think so fondly of us around the table sometimes with the 4 of us and sometimes with 16 of us and mom making her wonderful stuffing, green bean casserle, turkey, mashed potatoes, maple sweet potatoes, and wonderful pies. It's only the memories I have left of them,so make them while you can.

I agree with lonepine.

My kids and myself watch the Macy's parade every Thanksgiving (just like when I was a kid in my parent's home) together, I get up durring commercial to check on my food (pies and cakes, done 2 days before, everything cold, like devil eggs, the night before, the turkey went in the night before, so not much left cooking on the stove), after the parade we eat dinner, then we call family members to talk to them, then depending on the weather, we play games outside or watch movies together. As the kids get hungry again we heat up the food or dive into the deserts.

Maybe you guys can go out there to visit your parents. Umm or you can have the big dinner and everything but involve the kids, that way they you can create fun moments together. Oh and maybe you can have a little gift exchange and play games, put up the Christmas tree. Or if you dont feel like cooking you could go to a really nice restaurant!

Have your 5 year old dress up as either a Pilgrim or an Indian and let them make the table's place mats and card holders for the seating arrangement. One year we took pine cones and cut out construction paper to resemble turkey feathers and stapled about five different colored ones at the bottom and then inserted them on the back of the pinecone. We then made our turkey head out of red construction paper and inserted that in the front. We then printed out each family member's names and inserted them in the turkey so each family member would know where to sit at the table. They turned out really cute. Place mats can also be made out of construction paper and the kids can draw fall pictures on them or a simple "we give thanks" in the middle. Have your kids say something they are grateful for after saying grace. And let them help out in whatever they can in the kitchen, whether it be helping roll out pie crust or mix the ingredients together for the pie. Hope you have a great holiday.

For my family(husband, kids 4 and 11, and myself). We use to cook together especially the desserts cause they like to taste them as I cook. I would have movies prepared for us for later and make caramel apples and popcorn balls for the movies. If you have leaves on the ground where you live you could have a leaf fight. do a bon fire and roast marshmallows.Camp outside. You could get together tell the kids to decide what that will do that night and be creative, they may surprise you. Unfortantely It will only be me and my kids this year so I really must be creative.

Include them in the cooking, and go buy some board games. Have a movie session where you watch movies after dinner. Anything like that will work!

If your family starts christmas the day after... you could plan to go get a tree or go shopping with the whole family for christmas ornaments. If you dont celebrate christmas. Go to a parade! go for a picnic. Do something very different~

Everyone can volunteer at a local food kitchen. They need lots of help on Thanksgiving.

Are your children boys or girls or boy and girl. It all depends on that and how cold it is where you're going to be. Maybe you can have a family fun thing outside. playing ball or horseshoes or tag..
