The irish national Anthem is Amhrán na bhFiann (the Soldier's Song). It was written in the early 1900 when many of the population wanted freedom from British rule.
First verse..
Soldiers are we
whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free,
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song
One verse even talks about Saxon foe although Britain is also made up of Celts, Vikings, Angles, Jutes, Romans etc etc. Why are the poor Saxons singled out hee hee !
It's not exactly peace loving song wihch I think the modern ireland deserves.
No racist, flammatory remarks please.
